Courchevel Runway

A small aircraft crashed into the mountainside at the end of the platform at Courchevel. Courchevel's sloped runway is Europe's highest at an altitude of 2003 meters(over 6500 feet !) and requires a special endorsement to the pilot's license to use.

The accident apparently happened just before we arrived. The fire truck was still near the arcraft and the luggage of the passengers can be seen on the tarmac.

The reason of the crash is not known by yours truly, and officials on the site were not giving comments yet. It appears the plane had too much speed upon landing and overshot the platform, ending up against the mountain slope at the end.

Although there is considerable damage visible (prop, nose gear, ripped off main gear), it looks as if the passengers and pilot have escaped with their lives.

The aircraft is a Cirrus 22, with an American registration, which is on the name of the Texas based Aircraft Guaranty Corp, which provides a way of registering foreign aircraft on a US license.

I'll try and get an official statement as soon as possible.

  • The stricken Cirrus 22 on the far end of the platform hit the mountainside. The aircraft is entangled in the blue nylon wires surrounding the field. The passenger's luggage can be seen on the tarmac, below the fire truck.

    Courchevel Crash

  • The US registered Cirrus 22 perched upon the mountain side, landing gear torn off, prop bent and for sure with more damage than is visible. The flaps are down, so the accident probably happened upon landing.
