Calling all surfers: FOX, UPN changing channels

Posted: Friday, September 06, 2002

Make the switch.

If you've been watching KMSP UPN channel 9, you've probably seen the catchy commercials hyping the much anticipated network affiliation switch with WFTC FOX channel 29 that will take place this Sunday.

On Sunday, KMSP will carry the FOX banner and all of it shows and sports while WFTC adds the UPN lineup.

That date also happens to be when most NFL teams open their season, including the Minnesota Vikings. All Vikings games this season will be found on KMSP channel 9.

Besides Vikings games, KMSP will broadcast a wide array of sports, including the NFC playoffs, the Major League Baseball playoffs, the World Series and NASCAR.

Both KMSP and WFTC will team up to broadcast Minnesota Timberwolves basketball and other NBA games as well as Minnesota Wild hockey games and the Minnesota State High School tournaments.

Locally, the channel numbers will stay the same, but what each station will now broadcast will be different. Carol Rueppel of KMSP/WFTC Minneapolis points out that the switch in affiliations will benefit both stations as well as its viewers.

"All the sports FOX has a right to will now be seen on KMSP," Rueppel said. "It is our understanding that there should be no disruption with cable subscribers once the switch is made."

Rueppel also said that there were a number of reasons for the two stations to make the switch. One of those reasons was to help each station with their programming.

"In both stations, there was a wealth of programming," said Rueppel. "Moving FOX's primetime shows over in front of KMSP's nine o'clock news cast just made a lot of sense. The new alignment of the programming also allows the audience a choice in complimentary and non-competing programs."
