Argentina 0-0 Brazil: Rival nations play out a stalemate in Cordoba

Alejandro Sabella's home debut ends in a stale goalless draw with the Selecao, with the game only coming to life during the final 15 minutes.

The first game of the eagerly anticipated Superclasico de las Americas tie got underway at the Estadio Mario Kempes in Cordoba, Argentina, with a tempo that was not befitting of the occasion.

Neymar showed glimpses of his brilliance for Brazil, but neither side was able to find a winning goal as the game ambled towards a goalless draw.

Argentina came close to taking the lead with just over half an hour gone. Juan Manuel Martinez, who had been the main outlet for the Argentina attack, ducked inside before unleashing a wild shot from 30 yards. The ball had the beating of Jefferson but it flashed past the post and out of play.

Neymar showed glimpses of his ability in the first half, but he was matched by Martinez for Argentina. The Velez player seemingly had the beating of Danilo, who was offered little protection from his Santos teammate.

Argentina resumed control after the restart as Brazil lacked urgency with the full backs not as adventurous usual.

The tempo rose during the last 15 minutes and Damiao showed some individual brilliance in the 77th minute to fashion himself a chance. A rainbow flick over the head of Emiliano Papa was followed with a lobbed effort that hit the back post.

Argentina immediately responded through Pablo Mouche. The young Boca forward’s 20 yard effort was saved by Jefferson. The teams were finally playing the football that the spectators had hoped for.

With 10 minutes of time left, Ronaldinho forced a strong save from Orion with a pearler of a set piece 20 yards from goal. The Boca keeper’s left hand pushed the ball out of the net and kept the scores level.

In what was a disappointing yet intriguing spectacle, Brazil takes a slight advantage in to the second leg in two weeks as it plays at home in Belem.
