This northern California city was founded in 1776 and today has a population of about 800,000. The ?city by the bay? is known for its exceptionally hilly terrain. The city grew exponentially in the mid-1800s as a result of the California Gold Rush and was then nearly destroyed by fire in 1906. Landmarks include the Golden Gate Bridge, completed in 1937, the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood that was the epicenter of the hippie movement in the late 1960s and the infamous Alcatraz prison. San Francisco, also known for its seafood cuisine and sprawling Chinatown district, is a relatively short and exceptionally scenic drive from California's famed wine country.
