Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D moved over half a million units in Week 22 of the 2012 Japanese software charts.

The RPG is a 3D remake of the Game Boy Color title, which came out in 1998.

Showcasing the strength of the Dragon Quest brand in Japan, the game not only moved 513,183 copies, but also helped to sell over 100,000 3DS units last week (helped by the Slime-themed 3DS you see above), the highest total for Nintendo's handheld since Week 13 (March 26-April 1).  That was the week Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance landed in Japan.

And it could've sold even more.  From Siliconera:

A report from sales tracker, Media Create, reveals that Terry’s Wonderland 3D sold through 93.96% of its shipment and was sold out at several stores on the day of its release.

Perhaps Square Enix were slightly more conservative with Terry’s Wonderland 3D’s shipment because of Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2. While that game sold 623,643 copies in its launch week in 2010, that number only represented 66.8% of its initial shipment.

Next closest to the Dragon's Quest title was Dragon's Dogma, last week's winner.  It fell from 302,040 to 82,985, a 73% drop off.

Taking the bronze was Mario Tennis Open, with 41,179 sales.

On the hardware side of things and as mentioned earlier, the 3DS continued its weekly assault.  The exact figure last week was 101,075, which was nearly double that from Week 21.

The PS3 ran a distant second with 14,799 units moved, in line with Week 21.  The Vita, which again finished behind the PSP, saw a small bump of about 900 sales, up to 7,551.
