Large number of people run for unity

SURAT : A large number of people from the diamond city participated in the 'Run for Unity' organised by the Gujarat Government on Sunday to pay tributes to iron man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 63rd death anniversary and seeking support for 'Statute of unity' project in Narmada river.

Youngsters, children and elderly people from across the city had participated proclaiming their support for the construction of the world's giant statute of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The run was flagged off by Ganpat Vasava, minister of forest and environment from the VIP Road canal junction in Vesu on Sunday in the presence of senior BJP leaders including Mayor Niranjan Zhanzmera, municipal commissioner, MK Das etc.

In an official release, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) claimed that around three lakh people from different walks of life participated in the 'Run for Unity', which was flagged off at about 7:00 am.

Ganpat Vasava, Minister of Forest and Environment said, "After we got independence, our country was divided. It was during this time, our former home minister and deputy prime minister, Sardar Patel took up a gigantic step to shape us as one nation. However, the true tributes to the iron man could be in the form of constructing a giant statute of unity at Narmada."

Arrangements were made for screening the live programme of inauguration of the Run for Unity by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at Vadodara on the giant LED screens set up at various locations along the path.
