HISTORY OF ILMAJOKI

The parish of Ilmajoki, which evolved into the municipality, was founded in 1516.

Ilmajoki is known in Finnish history as teh home of Jaakko Ilkka, leader of a peasant rebellion in the 16th century. The uprising was against governor Fleming, who was felt to be unfair towards the peasants. The field of Ilkka is nowadays the scene on the annual Ilmajoki Music Festival.

WELCOME TO ILMAJOKI!

Ilmajoki is a dynamic municipality of 12 000 inhabitants, situated in the middle of the Finnish province of Southern Ostrobothnia. Rural culture is still alive and well, but the Ilmajoki of today also boasts modern industry and contemporary residential areas. Helsinki can be reached from the local airport in less than an hour.

ILMAJOKI IS FULL OF LIFE AND ACTIVITY AND IT PROVIDES EXCELLENT SERVICES

There are three modern built-up areas in Ilmajoki: The City Centre, Koskenkorva, and Ahonkylä situated a 5-10 min drive away from the city of Seinäjoki.

Ilmajoki is ideal for builders: a spacious city plan with reasonably priced sites situated in beautiful surroundings available throughout the municipality.

 

ILMAJOKI AND SPORTS

There are 23 registered sports clubs at Ilmajoki, with altogether 6500 active members. This means that over half of the people of Ilmajoki are involved in some sporting activity or another.

ILMAJOKI AND EDUCATION

In addition to comprehensive schools and an upper secondary school, there are several educational institutes specialising in a multitude of disciplines. It is possible to study woodcrafts, textile work, or renovation building, to obtain a degree in agriculture at the polytechnic, or to pursue all-round studies under the auspices on the universities of Helsinki, Turku and Jyväskylä. It is also possible to study music, arts, and handicraft as well as many other disciplines.

ILMAJOKI SUPPORTS ENTREPRENEURS

Entrepreneurs are supported by the close relationship between the municipality of Ilmajoki and the business world, as well as through flexible decision making. Logistic services such as the airport and good road connections into all directions make contacts elsewhere easy. There are metal and electronics industries in the area, as well as textile productions, furniture industry, advanced technology, agriculture, services etc.

The alcoholic beverage most favoured by Finns, Koskenkorva, is distilled at Ilmajoki.

 

METAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY

A group of system providers, specialising in the fields of environmental and energy saving technologies, has formed into Ilmajoki. They represent know-how in the areas of steel structure and machine building, finishing processes, the design of water handling processes and water works, and in water chemistry and water analysis.

FURNITURE INDUSTRY

Ilmajoki has on long tradition of wood processing, There is an abundance of professional labour and many possibilities in this area. Trading in furniture is an old tradition of Ilmajoki.

AGRICULTURE AND THE FOOD INDUSTRY

Ilmajoki is situated at the heart of the Southern Ostrobothnia foodstuffs industries. Specialised farms produce milk, meat ant grain. Part of the productions is also processed locally.

 

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCES AT ILMAJOKI

Ilmajoki is famous for high-class cultural events such as the Ilmajoki Music Festival. Music festivals are an integral part of culture during Finland's summer months. A Finnish folk opera is traditionally the highlight of the Ilmajoki Music Festival. The wide ranging program of the music festival contains something for everybody  -  from gospel to folk music.

The valuable cultural heritage of Ilmajoki is also evident in its buildings. Ancient two-storey Ostrobothnian country houses represent Finnish building tradition as its best. The Yli-Laurosela museum building is an example of the local traditional style, and the Ilmajoki museum has around 15 000 artefacts typifying rustic culture, including the era of the famous Könni clock builders.
