31 December 2004 - mobile numbers in 8-digit format

Mobile numbers in Jordan were standardised to an 8-digit format, +962 7 xxxxxxxx, as of 31 December 2004.

Migration details from previous numbers was not indicated, although it is likely that the last digit of the former mobile area code was prepended to the subscriber number - e.g. +962 79 5xxxxxx could have become +962 7 95xxxxxx.

The following ranges took effect with the change:

Number range     Carrier/service
============     ===============
+962 7 454xxxxx  XPress (trunked radio dispatch)
+962 7 455xxxxx  XPress (trunked radio dispatch)

12 April 2002 - GSM mobile number changes

On 12 April 2002, '5' was prepended to existing GSM mobile subscriber numbers. Area codes remained unchanged at this time. This included Fastlink's pre-paid users (on +962 79). For example, +962 79 xxxxxx became +962 79 5xxxxxx.

General/Regulatory Notes

A National Numbering Plan and guidelines document is available from TRC. The publication date was not specified, but the document made reference to studies conducted in 2002.

Short codes are of format 1xx (with provision to expand to 1xxx format).

Number ranges with subscriber number digits are as follows:

Number range Location/Service ============ ================ +962 2 xxxxxxx fixed/geographic - Northern region +962 3 xxxxxxx fixed/geographic - Southern region +962 5 xxxxxxx fixed/geographic - Middle region +962 6 xxxxxxx fixed/geographic - Greater Amman +962 7 xxxxxxxx mobile/paging/personal +962 8 xxxxxxx special (Freephone, Fixed Cost, Shared Cost) +962 9 xxxxxxx premium Subscriber numbers were once known to be 5-6 digits. The time at which this was expanded to 7-8 digits is unclear; an announcement by regulator TRC in July 2001 indicated 7-digit subscriber numbers in effect for both fixed and mobile subscriber numbers.

Numbering plan information is posted (Word document format, as of 1 July 2001) on an ITU numbering page.

National regulator is Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).

TRC is under the Jordan Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (formerly Ministry of Post and Communications until 2002).
