Seeking contract sysadmin for Passionate Produce

Many of you may know that I’m launching a new startup called Passionate Produce – a radically inclusive, sex-positive crowdfunding platform. Now that the site is open for beta testers, I’m looking for a contract sysadmin.

This is a part-time job that will require working with Linux, Postgres, and Nginx; setting up automated backups; and maintaining uptime on a production server. Previous experience with Rails, Memcached, and scaling production sites a plus. Compensation is negotiable (1099).

Interested? Please email me your resume.

Upcoming Talk: Arse Elektronika 10/5 (SF)

Are you in the San Francisco area? Come hear me speak at Arse Elektronika 2013!

If you had the chance to take your favorite hobby and turn it into a business, would you?

What if that hobby were sex?

Dr. Kristen Stubbs shares her adventures as a sex-positive entrepreneur, including her lessons learned and advice for folks who are interested in founding sex-positive businesses of their own.  Kristen will discuss pseudonymity, dealing with the sex-negative world, finding collaborators, and more.

No prior business experience is required or assumed — Kristen didn’t have much when she started, either!

What: Sex-Positive Startup Stories or: Phase 1: Sex / Phase 2: ? / Phase 3: Profit
When: Saturday, October 5, ~1:30pm
Where: The Center for Sex & Culture (1349 Mission b/w 9th and 10th, San Francisco)

Arse Elektronika is an incredibly fun meeting of the (pervy) minds: here’s the complete schedule. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.

RSVP (not required, but it’s nice to know who I might get to see!)

Startup Stories: Release the Hounds!

Er, I mean…

Passionate Produce has opened for beta testing!

Passionate Produce is my new startup: a radically inclusive, sex/kink-positive crowdfunding platform. If you’re subscribed to our newsletter, shortly you should be receiving an email invite.

This is one of the scariest things I’ve done in a long time.  I want to push the site forward and get good feedback, but it’s hard to invite folks in when I know about all the things that still need tweaking.  Will people come away with a positive impression of my company, or have I just made an epic mistake?

All I can do is take a deep breath and see what happens!

Video: The Toymaker Project at the Phage Seminar Series 2013

At Burning Man 2013, Phage invited me to speak as part of their seminar series. I talked about technological empowerment for sexuality and pleasure, and I gave a live demonstration of The Hammer: Burning Man Edition! Below you’ll find the video of my presentation as well as a copy of my slides.

If you’ve ever watched an online lecture and thought, “Gee, this could really use a glowing, rainbow-colored penis,” you’ll love my talk.  (And if you’ve read this far, there’s a good chance you’ll like my talk anyways.)

The Hammer goes to Burning Man!

I just got accepted to present as part of Phage’s lecture series during Burning Man!  If any of you will be out on the playa, please come and see my talk.

  • What: Me talking about DIY sex toys complete with a toy prototype demo (a new version of The Hammer)
  • When: Monday night (8/26). Lectures start at 8pm, I’m slated to be last speaker (theoretically starting at 8:45pm-ish)
  • Where: The Phage dome. Phage is part of The Institute (with False Profit and the Relaxomats) at 5:00 and Esplanade, between Death Guild and the Red Nose District.

Can’t make my talk? Assuming the playa isn’t too hard on my prototype, I expect to be wearing it most evenings. After all, how could I go to Burning Man without a large, glowing, rainbow penis?

See you in the dust!

In Defense Of PonyGasm

In which I examine PonyGasm, an erotic comic which began as a crowdfunding project mocked on Tumblr and then taken down by IndieGoGo. My rating: Five fingers up.

Note: This story contains graphic descriptions of my own sexual experiences. If reading about my sex life might be TMI for you, then you’ll want to skip this post. (Especially if you’re not interested in 1980′s toys.)

Seeking sex-positive Ruby on Rails developer for short-term project

These days I’m spending most of my time launching my new startup, Passionate Produce (passionateproduce.com) — a sex-positive, kink-positive crowdfunding platform. I’m looking for a Ruby on Rails developer for contract work leading up to launch; if things go well, I’d also be interested in further site maintenance and enhancements.

The website is a whitelabel crowdfunding platform based on Catarse, and now I need someone to do customization (Somerville/Cambridge/Boston-area preferred). I’m estimating it’s around 20-40 hours of work. Experience with Heroku and/or Cloud 66 is a plus. Compensation is negotiable (1099).

Interested? Please email me a resume and code sample.

Working with Silicone for DIY Toys

The most frequently asked questions I get from this blog are from folks who are interested in making their own toys out of silicone.  Someday I hope to put together a more step-by-step guide which will cover the entire casting process, but at least for now I can tell you about the materials that I’ve used when making my own toys.

Before I get started, let me remind you that I am not a medical doctor.  Please use common sense when selecting materials and designing toys.  I’m presenting you with the best information that I have, but using a condom over any homemade toy is the safest course of action.

An Open Letter To People With Penises

While the primary focus of this letter is people with penises, other people may find some of these ideas interesting or helpful.

To all of the people who have a penis (a bio-cock) and who enjoy using it with other people:

Greetings! I’m writing to you because I’d like to tell you about some of the things that I’ve been thinking about with respect to sex and penises. These aren’t things that are said very often in mainstream US culture.
