SWC 2013, Beijing Day 2: Hosszu, Le Clos win FINA World Cup
Big smiles and countless gold medals, Katinka Hosszu of Hungary and Chad Le Clos of South Africa became clinch the World Cup title for the second time, finishing on a high note at Beijing's last stop of the eight-meet circuit on November 14, 2013.
As the busiest swimmer of all, double World champion Hosszu seemed rusty in all her five finals on Thursday evening with no gold medal, claiming respectable silvers and bronzes instead.
SWC 2013, Beijing Day 1: Hosszu continues to shine at Water Cube on opening night
Though no World record or World Cup record was broken, World champion Katinka Hosszu of Hungary still took the spotlight by winning two gold medals and one bronze, out of five race, while Cate Campbell of Australia slammed three titles on Day 1 of the FINA Swimming World Cup 2013 at Beijing's iconic Water Cube on November 13.
Current leader of the overall rankings after seven meets, Hosszu collected her first victory in the 200m freestyle, clocking 1:53.82, while Melanie Costa of Spain and Lauren Boyle of New Zealand came in 1:54.57 and 1:55.20, respectively. Hosszu later celebrated her second gold in the 200m IM in a swift 2:05.34, 2.14 seconds shy of her own World record set in Eindhoven last August. Alicia Coutts of Australia came second in 2:06.23 while Sophie Allen of Britain claimed bronze in 2:06.71.
SWC 2013, Tokyo Day 2: Three world records close the show in Tokyo (JPN)
Russian Yulia Efimova and Australians shot two World records at the FINA Swimming World Cup series in Tokyo (JPN) here on Sunday as Efimova renewed the women's 50m breaststroke and the Aussie team the mixed 4x50m freestyle relay.
Efimova breezed to win the sprint breaststroke in 28.71 seconds, 0.09 faster than the previous mark set by Jessica Hardy of the United States in 2009. Alia Atkinson of Jamaica took the silver in 29.06.
SWC 2013, Tokyo Day 1: Australia improves mixed medley relay WR
Robert Hurley, Christian Sprenger, Alicia Coutts and Cate Campbell of Australia improved their own World record in the mixed 4X50 metres medley relay during the seventh leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup here in Tokyo, Japan, from November 9-10, while South African star Chad Le Clos lifted three titles. The Aussie quartet touched the wall in 1:37.84, eclipsing the previous World record of 1:38.02 set at the Singapore leg four days ago.
"It's great to break the World record again. I am excited to share the podium with my younger sister Bronte. We two just finished a one-two in Singapore, so we did it here in Tokyo. Hopefully we can repeat that feat in Beijing", said Cate Campbell who won the women's 50m freestyle in 23.47 while Bronte Campbell and Dorothea Brandt of Germany both tied for silvers in 23.91.
SWC 2013, Singapore Day 2: Le Clos and Atkinson best swimmers in Singapore
South African Chad Le Clos and Jamaican Alia Atkinson emerged the leading swimmers at the Singapore leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup at the Singapore Sports School on Wednesday, November 6.
Le Clos claimed five gold medals and a world record, including three golds on the final night. His 1015 points on night one, when eclipsing his 200m butterfly world mark, was the meet’s best by far.
SWC 2013, Singapore Day 1: Three world records kick off Singapore leg in style
Three key elements came together to enthuse the Singapore crowd on day one of the third and final cluster of the FINA Swimming World Cup at the Singapore Sports School on Tuesday, November 5.
The much-hyped Chad Le Clos from South Africa and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu were the main drawcards, and they did not disappoint with two golds each, on what was a world-record-breaking day where the 4x50m Australian mixed medley relay twice went under France’s mark.
SWC 2013, Doha Day 2: Unstoppable Hosszu wins big
France set a new World record in the mixed 4x50m freestyle relay. With a swift start by Olympic champion in the 50m free Florent Manaudou (21.22), teammates Jeremy Stravius, Melanie Henique and Anna Santamans completed the race in 1:31.14, ahead of China (1:32.74) and Japan (1:33.80).
Hungarian swimming icon Katinka Hosszu finished her meet on a high note with three more wins in the 400m IM (4:28.91), 200m fly (2:06.60) and 100m IM (58.43). Hosszu also picked up silver in the 100m back (57.49), a hundredth of a second behind Daryna Zevina from Ukraine (57.48). In this race, Japan's 19-year-old Sayaka Akase took third, 6 hundredths of a second behind the winner.
SWC 2013, Doha Day 1: WR for France in mixed medley, double for Hosszu, Le Clos and Schoeman
The fifth stage of the FINA Swimming World Cup 2013, taking place in Doha (QAT) from October 20-21, featured a high level of competition with nine Olympic champions or medallists in individual events from the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, 13 World champions long course (2013) and short course (2012), and five short-course record holders. In comparison to the first Doha edition in 2012, participation has raised noticeably with the presence of 197 swimmers from 41 countries (there were 115 swimmers from 30 nations last year).
Doha's Hamad Aquatic Center in the Aspire Zone provided the backdrop to the first World record established in the city, set by the French quartet of Jeremy Stravius, Giacomo Perez Dortona, Melanie Henique and Anna Santamans in the mixed 4x50m medley relay, clocking 1:39.54. Doha is the 85th city and Qatar, 31st nation, to register a World record in 25m-pool since the first approval by FINA on March, 3rd 1991. Out of the 41 countries competing, 19 climbed the podium, 13 of them claiming victory. South Africa tops the table with six medals (4 gold, 2 silver). Hungary is second (2 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze) and Australia, third (2 gold , 1 silver, 1 bronze).
SWC 2013, Dubai Day 2: WR for Japan in mixed free relay
The Dubai leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup 2013 concluded in fine style tonight, with Japan taking a World record in the last event on the programme, the mixed 4x50m freestyle relay in 1:32.52. It was the only World record of the meet, and the Japanese team of Shinri Shioura, Sayaka Akase, Kenta Ito and Kanako Watanabe were delighted. "We are very happy" said Shioura, "this is one second faster than in Moscow." Brazil took silver in the relay, in 1:32.95, with China in third in 1:33.72.
Shioura’s gold gave him the box set, after picking up silver in the 4x50m mixed medley relay and bronze in the 50m breaststroke on Day 1. It also made two golds for Sayaka Akase, who took gold in the women’s 100m backstroke tonight in 57.24 ahead of Australia’s Emily Seebohm (57.53) who just edged out Ukraine’s Daryna Zevina in 57.56 in one of the many close finishes of the evening.
SWC 2013, Dubai Day 1: Le Clos rattles WR in 200 fly, Hosszu picks up five medals
One of the biggest crowds seen at a swimming event in Dubai since the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in 2010 flocked to the Hamdan Sports Complex tonight to witness the world’s best swimmers in action, and they did not leave disappointed.
The action kicked off with Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia continuing her winning form from the Moscow leg of the series conducted last weekend, with victory in the 800m freestyle.
