Swansea: Michael Laudrup must enter the transfer market in January

Swansea: must buy to remain buoyant, says Dean

Swansea must recruit in January or risk becoming embroiled in a relegation scrap.

That's the view of former Swans striker Dean Saunders after he watched the Welshmen's 3-2 defeat to title-chasing Manchester City in the Sky Sports studio on New Year's Day.

"They are sliding towards the relegation zone and cannot wait six weeks for Michu to recover from his ankle surgery."

The Jacks have failed to win any of their last six Premier League matches and Saunders thinks they need reinforcements this month following a tiring year at home and abroad.

"[Wilfried] Bony was brilliant against Man City, scoring twice, but Swansea need another striker," Saunders, who has previously managed Wrexham, Doncaster and Wolves, told Sky Sports.

"They are sliding towards the relegation zone and cannot wait six weeks for Michu to recover from his ankle surgery.

Changed

"They finished ninth in the Premier League last year, won the Capital One Cup and have played in Europe - and it's now catching up with them.

"They haven't got enough players - some of them looked out on their feet against City - and so Michael Laudrup needs to do something."

Manuel Pellegrini's Citizens, meanwhile, have toiled on the road this season, but the win in Wales was their sixth away game in a row without defeat, a run that includes a victory at Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Saunders says the Etihad Stadium outfit were not at their best at the Liberty Stadium but praised the impact of Pellegrini and midfield maestro Yaya Toure - and explained why City are favourites to lift the Premier League trophy.

"As soon as City went 2-1 up [with a goal from Toure] Pellegrini changed the system and put Toure in behind [Edin] Dzeko and he started making runs forward, so all credit to the manager for that," added the former Wales international.

"City didn't play brilliantly but they were efficient and have key, class players all over the pitch who can score at any time, which is what they have over everyone else at the top."
