Lucy Van Dalen '12: Olympic Athlete, MA/LS Alumna

Stony Brook University's most decorated student-athlete in history is also a graduate of the School of Professional Development. Lucy Van Dalen, the six-time All-American, earned her Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MA/LS) while training for the 2012 Olympic games. She secured her bid to compete in London less than one month after graduating.

The New Zealand native is not only a standout athlete, she proved to be an excellent student as well. Lucy graduated magna cum laude with an undergraduate degree in sociology before pursuing the MA/LS, which she did alongside her twin sister, Holly—another SBU track athlete. The sisters performed as well in the classroom as they did on the track, earning matching 4.0 GPAs.

Lucy represented her home country in the women's 1500-meter race—the first woman to represent New Zealand in that race in more than a decade. She performed well at this year's games, making it all the way to semi-finals.

Ever the overachiever, Lucy has no intention of slowing down. She and Holly are already training together for the 2016 games in Rio.
