Veteran Mridangam Vidwan Vellore Ramabhadran, who created niche in the world of carnatic music with his exemplary style , passed away here on Monday. He was 82. Born in 1929 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, Vellore Gopala Ramabhadran received his training in Mridangam from his father Shri. Vellore T.P.Gopalachari. He was also trained in vocal music, Kanjira, Ghatam and Konakkol. He made his first public appearance in 1942 as a Mridangam accompanist for Madurai Mani Iyer and has been a professional artist from his twenties. He has performed extensively, accompanying leading Carnatic vocalists and instrumentalists at home and abroad. Among other notable appearances, he was featured in the Festivals of India in U.K., U.S.A., and U.S.S.R.In his musical career that spanned nearly seven decades, Ramabhadran accompanied doyens, including Chembai Vaidyanatha Bagavathar, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer, Ariyakkudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Madurai Mani Iyer, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Musiri Subramania Iyer, G.N. Balasubramaniam, flute Mahalingam and Maharajapuram Santhanam. His performances with seasoned artistes such as Lalgudi Jayaraman, T. N. Krishnan, T. V. Sanakaranarayanan, T. K. Govinda Rao, T. N. Seshagopalan, N. Ramani, B. Rajam Iyer and P. S. Narayanaswami are cherished by rasikas.
