Altman To Be Introduced As Oregon Coach Monday
The University of Oregon has scheduled a news conference for Monday afternoon when Dana Altman will be introduced as the new men’s head basketball coach.
Altman and Oregon have reportedly agreed in principle to a seven-year deal to make Altman the new head Duck. Sources say Altman will be taking his entire coaching staff with him.
Channel 6 spoke Saturday with Oregon senior associate athletic director Joe Giansante, who said he can neither confirm nor deny the rumor of Altman and Oregon discussing a deal, however Giansante did say the university's search has led to contact with around 100 coaches and Altman's name continues to come up as one of the best in the business.
Altman has been at Creighton for 16 years. He had been introduced as Arkansas’ coach three years ago, but changed his mind and returned to Creighton.
The 51-year-old Wilber, Nebraska native has led Creighton to the postseason 13 times in his 16 seasons, including seven NCAA Tournament appearances. The Bluejays were 18-16 last season, 10-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
So now the question becomes, who will replace Altman?
Former CU assistant coach and player Kevin McKenna is the current head coach at Indiana State. He served under Altman for nine seasons.
Another name is current UNLV assistant Greg Grensing. Reggie Theus is being mentioned as a possible replacement as is Scott Sutton, the son of Eddie, who was born in Omaha when his dad coached here. He is currently the head man at Oral Roberts.
