Online support for Gran Turismo 5 also set to be scrapped.
Sony has revealed that all online support for Gran Turismo 5 and the tragically underrated Resistance series will cease in the first half of 2014.
The server culls are part of a now regular appraisal of Sony’s network and unfortunately communities for Resistance, Gran Turismo 5, MAG, SOCOM: Special Forces and Confrontation didn’t make the cut.
What’s most damning about those last three titles is that they are online-only games, so by turning off those servers Sony are essentially killing any potential to enjoy those games past the closure date.
Servers supporting MAG, SOCOM: Special Forces and SOCOM: Confrontation will cease to operate on Tuesday, 28th January.
Better play Resistance 2's iconic multiplayer component while you can...
The servers handling online multiplayer components for Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 will shutdown on Friday, 28th March – leaving only the single-player campaigns still playable.
And last but by no means least, Gran Turismo 5 servers will shut on Tuesday, 20th May meaning that players will no longer be able to take part in online events or race against each other competitively.
All these games are several years old at this point, with Gran Turismo 5 the most recent casualty and even that sequel was released in 2010. Still, these closures will be a bitter pill to swallow if you happen to be part of any of these diminished yet nonetheless important communities.
At least Gran Turismo 5 players have a new game to flock to, Resistance, MAG and SOCOM fans aren’t quite so fortunate…
