Ronaldo sets Champions League goals record

Real Madrid
Cristiano Ronaldo became the first man ever to score nine goals in a season in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, when he scored the second goal in the 2-0 win over FC Copenhagen.

The Portuguese was tied with with Hernán Crespo who had the same total in 2002/03, Filippo Inzaghi in the same 2002/03, Ruud van Nistelrooy who had the same number at the same stage in 2004/05 and Zlatan Ibrahimovic who has also scored eight goals this year.

Extended

But while Ibrahimovic was absent for Paris Saint Germain in their 2-1 loss at Benfica, Ronaldo scored a 48th minute goal to stand alone.

And the Portuguese could have extended the record further, but he fluffed his lines in the 85th minute of the encounter, when he played a penalty straight at Johan Wiland.

Competition

Ronaldo now has 15 goals in 2013, the most for a player in a calendar year in the UEFA Champions League.

Ronaldo also has 60 goals all time, and is now two goals short of joining Ruud van Nistelrooy in sixth place of the all-time goalscorer list in all European competitions.
