Holding national flags and portraits of military chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, Egyptians celebrate the passage of a new constitution after 98.1 percent of voters supported Egypt's military-backed constitution in a two-day election, in Tahrir Square, Cairo, Egypt, Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014. In the lead up to the vote, police arrested those campaigning for a "no" vote on the referendum, leaving little room for arguing against the document. (AP Photo/El Shorouk Newspaper, Sabry Khaled)

Cairo (AFP) - The turnout in Egypt's constitutional referendum "reached 38.6 percent," higher than that in a 2012 referendum under ousted president Mohamed Morsi, the electoral chief said at a press conference on Saturday.

The military-installed authorities had looked for a high turnout as a popular endorsement of the July overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.
