Ironbound Community Comes Together to Support Annual Children’s Coat & Toy Drive

A coalition including East Ward Councilman Augusto Amador, the Ironbound Business Improvement District (IBID), the Newark Police Department, the Portuguese American Police Association (PAPA) and the Ironbound Community Corporation (ICC) is sponsoring the annual Ironbound Holiday Coat & Toy Drive to benefit the needy of our community.  Donations of new toys and new and good quality used coats for children ranging in age from infants to 18 years old will gladly be accepted until Friday, December 20th.

Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 9:00 am till 4:30 pm and on Saturdays by special arrangement at Little City Hall, 113 Monroe Street. Donations can also be dropped off at Investors Bank’s Ironbound branch offices (184 Ferry Street, 255 Lafayette Street and 275 Chestnut Street) and at Garden State Community Bank (37 Wilson Avenue). Check with the banks regarding their office hours.

IBID A Partner in Statewide Pedestrian Safety Education Campaign

The City of Newark is one of five municipalities selected to participate in a statewide pedestrian safety education campaign pilot program to address the high incidence of pedestrian-motor vehicle crashes in New Jersey (the rate is double the national average and Newark ranks number one in the state for pedestrian fatalities).

The campaign is branded “Be Street Smart” and urges pedestrians and motorists to “Check Your Vital Signs” to improve your safety on the road.  The vital signs for motorists are “obey posted speed limits” and “stop for pedestrians in crosswalks” (the latter is the law), and “use crosswalks” and “wait for the walk signal” for pedestrians.

The campaign’s goal is to educate pedestrians and motorists about their duties and responsibilities so they make safety their top priority whether they’re walking or driving. The endgame is to prevent crashes and save lives.
