The latest Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll has bad news for the president and for Congress. The nation is in a dark mood about the economy, the direction of the country and the ability of folks in this town (i.e. President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner) to work together to get things done. But as my nifty homemade chart of one data point shows, the survey is pretty clear on who has the advantage.

When asked to “rate your feelings” as “very positive, somewhat positive, neutral, somewhat negative, or very negative,” the president got a 42 percent positive-44 percent negative rating. The Republican Party got walloped, with a 24 percent positive-47 percent negative rating. Job approval numbers are no better. Obama and Congress got a 51 percent and 81 percent disapproval rating, respectively.

With disapproval and negativity ratings so high, neither side has anything to crow about. But in the policy fights to come after tonight’s State of the Union address, I’d rather be Obama than Boehner.
