Avg user rating:

Rummy is set in 1987 in rural Tamil Nadu. It's a romantic story told in the background of a small town college campus background. As with village subjects nowadays, it has some level of violence.

The movie starts as an assorted group of students join a Government College.

Sakthi (Inigo Prabhakaran) and Joseph (Vijay Sethupathy) become class mates and roommates in the hostel. Meenakshi (Gayathrie) and Soori join them in the college as well. A romance develops between Inigo Prabhakaran and Gayathrie. Vijay Sethupathy has a separate romantic track with Aishwarya.

The first half goes well with a good amount of humour from Soori. It has two nice songs. The movie takes a serious turn in the second half as parents of the girls find out about the romance. The movie ends with a stunning climax with a twist.

Vijay Sethupathy plays the role of a friend to the main lead Inigo Prabhakaran, but he still has a substantial role. The role doesn't demand too much from Vijay Sethupathy but he has performed well as always. Inigo Prabhakaran has done a decent job. But he is yet to develop the screen presence that is required for a main lead role.

Gayathrie as Meenakshi fits the village girl role well. She has two songs. Aishwarya has to do lot of heavy duty acting in the climax. She has done a reasonably good job. Soori offers comic relief in the movie. He has only few scenes in the movie. The supporting cast has done a good job.

If there is one person who stands tall in Rummy, it is the music director D. Imman. His songs such as Kooda Mela... Kooda Vaichu... and a few others are already hits with outstanding BGMs elevating. K. Balakrishnan makes a decent debut with Rummy, but it is predictable and at times the pace sags. As usual first half is decent, while the story loses its steam post-interval.

Verdict: Average
