Council clamps down on fly-tippers as forest roads fill up with rubbish (From East London and West Essex Guardian Series)

Epping Forest District Council has taken two people to court for fly-tipping in Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill

As forest roads are filling up with household furniture, building materials and bags crammed with rubbish, the district council has promised that it is waging war on fly-tippers.

Recently, forest keepers announced a worrying trend, claiming that roads in Epping Forest are being targeted every day by people avoiding the dump.

Due to the nature of fly-tipping it can be difficult to catch the perpetrators. However, when they are, Epping Forest District Council is determined to see that they are named and shamed for their crimes against the environment.

Last month, the council took 43-year-old Moji Allison to court for abandoning 34 black sacks beside the block of yellow flats at Limes Farm.

Mrs Allison, of Limes Avenue, Chigwell pleaded guilty at Harlow Magistrates' Court on August 13 and was given a 12-month conditional discharge order and fined £150.

Mr Andrew Way of Belvedere Road, Leyton was fined £250 for eight offences relating to fly tipping at the rear of the shops in Loughton Way, Buckhurst Hill.

He was ordered to pay £1,843 of the Council’s prosecution costs, including £300 to go towards clear up costs. 

Mr Way pleaded guilty to eight offences of knowingly causing controlled waste to be deposited on land.

The prosecution of Andrew Way came after two years of council investigation relating to bags of soil being dumped in Buckhurst Hill.

In March 2012 Council Officers were able to obtain evidence of a man depositing sacks of waste from a Ford Fiesta car between March and October 2012, also that he had connections with a property in Danbury Way, Loughton.

Epping Forest District Council says that it is continuing to work with agencies such as the City of London Corporation to clamp down on fly-tippers.

Non-hazardous household waste can be taken to Essex County Council recycling centres at Luxborough Lane, Chigwell and Brooker Road, Waltham Abbey.
