LinkBrilliant firelight illuminates the scene as 2,000 torches are lit from the sacred fire carried by special torch bearers at the Otou Fire Festival on Mt. Kamikura in Shingu, Japan. Once the torches are lit, the sacred temple gates are opened and participants run down 538 stone steps to the bottom of the mountain. Participants traditionally take the flaming torches home to light kitchen fires. The ancient New Year's festival, symbolizing the return of the sun and warmer spring weather, dates from 1,400 years ago and was originally based on the lunar calendar.
