We stopped by here on TripAdvisor promises of an 'authentic' experience. While it was a quaint, classic, little cafe, the food wasn't that great. Their supposed specialty was a very basic piece of fish. Meh. Check it out if you're in the neighborhood, but don't go out of your way.

Are you in search of something typical Spanish? This is it. The first time we ate the best tapas in the cafetaria. We went back for the resto but before 20:30 ... Closed ... No problem. We did thevtapas again ;-) two times very good and friendly waiters.

Went here on a recommendation and were very glad we did. First time arrived at around 12pm and managed to get a table. On request there are English menus. We tried the fried cod, cod croquettes, tuna and tomato and meat parcels, all of which were great, but the fried cod in particular was superb!!! There was also a selection... More

Its central, and does have a few good dishes, but the rest are just ok and the restaurant didn't blow me away.

We arrived early by Spanish standards as it was our first night in Madrid and hadn't quite got the hang of dining times (21.30-22.00 really does seem to be the time to sit down to eat). There was a bar area which was deserted, and we were shown through into the restaurant (also very quiet). Despite this we had a... More

The place is very easy to find behind Puerta de la Sol square. It is open from 9:30 to 15:30(3:30pm) and from 17:30(5:30pm) to 23:00(11pm). Forget about everything else but: 1. Fried bacalau(€1.30) - piece of fried cod fish. The best fried fish we ever tried. 2. Croquetas(€0.85) - piece of fried cheese. Very crispy from outside and melting texture... More

The variety of tapas is very poor. Avoid sandwiches - they are dry and really tasteless. The place is crowded probably because of its history. If you come for bacalao or Crockets it is OK, If you are looking for decent good/tapas - avoid it.

This place is a Madrid institution. Eat in or take out. The queues for take out can be long on weekends - but don't be put off. The fish is terrific. Fast food - Spanish style.

Every time we are around Sol in Madrid we have to drop by this very traditional Spanish bar to get a handful of croquetas de bacalao (crispy outside creamy inside and with a hint of cod fish, enough to be remarcably yummy, not too much to be fishy). Seems always to be super busy, but it just takes them minutes... More

We went there every day in the evening on our holiday for a cania (or two or three) of cerveza (beer) or vino tinto (red wine). Nibble included these cod croquettes which were delicious.
