Heading Toward the Common Core State Standards

Education Northwest Magazine - Summer 2012

Volume 17. Number 3.

The summer issue of Education Northwest Magazine focuses on the Common Core State Standards. We’ve talked with state education agency staff members from around the region about their current implementation efforts and challenges. Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington are all moving forward to support the implementation of the common core. While Alaska has not adopted the standards, the state is working on a parallel effort to revise its standards.

We also feature the efforts of two districts that have a head start on implementation. Our story on Bethel School District in Eugene, Oregon, describes how teachers have been instrumental in designing and leading the district’s approach to implementing the new standards. We also highlight how Seattle Public Schools has incorporated the common core into its efforts to retool high school courses to focus on college and career readiness.

Inside the Summer 2012 Issue

Putting College and Career Readiness First
Seattle Public Schools retool high school courses to make them more consistent throughout the district and more focused on preparing students for postsecondary options.

Planning for Effective District Implementation
What does it take to shift into gear with the common core? We offer advice for district administrators, principals, and teachers on steps to take toward implementation.

Common Core State Standards in the Northwest
State-level efforts are moving into the implementation phase. We provide a brief summary of how each state is approaching the work and how the common core is already changing the way they do business.

Lessons for Life
Putting common core standards in place takes shared ownership by district and school staff, as well as a shift in classroom focus. But, the effort pays off for teachers and students in Oregon’s Bethel School District.

Assessing the Common Core
We map out differences and similarities between the two “next generation” assessments being designed to measure student knowledge under the common core.
