Delaware and Shawnee Indians frequently traveled through the area. 1731 - The site of present Johnstown visited by Davenport and LeTort, scouting for officials of the Pennsylvania government. These men located an Indian village, "Conemaugh Old Town" at the forks of the Connumach. 1769 - Johnstown was first surveyed, the area between the two rivers being 249 acres. 1793 - Campbell tract purchased by Joseph Schantz for 435 pounds. The tract consisted of 249 acres, bought for $8.50 per acre. 1794 - Joseph Schantz (changed to Johns by early residents) settled in Johnstown, built a house and began to clear land for a farm. 1800 - Johnstown was establed as "Conemaugh Old Town" by Joseph Johns and part of his tract was divided into 141 lots with streets, alleys and parks. 1804 - Cambria County was created and Ebensburg was named the county seat, against Joseph Johns' hopes. 1807 - Joseph Johns sold his interests in the valley to Hartley and Anderson and moved to Somerset. 1813 - The Johns tract sold to Brenizer and Burrell for $12,583.33. 1828 - Johnstown's population was 200. 1830-1834 - Construction of the Pennsylvania Canal through Johnstown. 1834 - The name of Conemaugh Borough was officially changed to Johnstown Borough. 1835 - The Johnstown Democrat, first local newspaper, started. 1836 - Pennsylvania Main Line Canal is built 1840 - Beginning of large-scale, iron industry in Johnstown with the enterprise of King, Stewart & Shryock. 1841 - Johnstown incorporated as a borough. 1842 - Charles Dickens visits Johnstown 1846 - Local iron industries owned by King & Schoenberger. 1848 - Cambria Iron Works constructed. 1849 - Conemaugh Borough was established. 1850 - Johnstown's population was 1,259. 1852 - King & Schoenberger sold their interests to Eastern financiers to form the Cambria Iron Co. Creation by William Kelly of the Pioneer steel converter of America. 1853 - Cambria Tribune newspaper founded 1856 - Johnstown's population was 6,000. 1858 - Millville Borough was established. 1860 - Cambria Iron Company is the leading steel poducer in the U.S. 1861 - Cambria Borough was established. 1863 - Prospect Borough was established. 1863 - Johnstown Democrat newspaper founded 1868 - Franklin Borough was established. 1868 - East Conemaugh Borough was established. 1870 - Woodvale Borough was established. 1873 - Cambria Tribune newspaper changes name to Johnstown Tribune 1882 - Grubbtown Borough was established. 1885 - Grandview Cemetery was founded. 1887 - April 30th - First interment at Grandview Cemetery - Lucretia Hammond of Kernville. 1889 - Johnstown's population was 20,639. 1889 - May 31st - The Great Flood 1889 - November 5th - The Boroughs of Conemaugh, Millville, Prospect, Woodvale and Grubbtown voted to consolidate with the Borough of Johnstown. 1891 - October 31st - Inclined Plane opens. 1892 - May 31st - Monument for the Unknown Dead dedicated at Grandview Cemetery. 1892 - June 13th - Westmont Borough incorporated. 1893 - Johnstown Opera House built in 1893. 1895 - Luna Park opens. 1895 - Greater Johnstown High School established 1897 - The Borough of Morrelville was annexed by the City of Johnstown. 1900 - City Hall, at the corner of Main and Market Streets, was dedicated. 1901 - Johnstown's population was 37,500. 1902 - City Hall erected at Main and Market streets. 1903 - Johnstown Opera House burned down. 1910 - Johnstown's population was 55,000. 1916 - Cambria Steel Co. became Midvale Steel & Ordnance Co. 1918 - Cambria Symphony Orchestra organized. 1919 - Westmont School district merges with Upper Yoder School District to form Westmont-Upper Yoder School District 1920 - Johnstown's population was 67,327. 1922 - Bishop McCort High School established 1923 - Midvale Steel & Ordnance Co. became Bethlehem Steel Co. 1925 - WJAC radio station begins to broadcast 1926 - Point Stadium constructed. 1926 - July 4th - The State Theater opened. 1929 - July 17th - Original Johnstown Airport along Goucher Street near Westwood dedicated. 1930, Johnstown was the 2nd city in the country to install lights in a stadium 1931 - Rolling Mill Mine closed. 1932- October - Johnstown Municipal Symphony Orchestra founded. 1936 - March 17th - 1936 Flood 1943 - $8,670,000 river channel flood-protection project completed after five years of construction. 1948 - Johnstown's Point Stadium set an attendance record at 14,791 for the Johnstown Johnnies 1948 - Johnstown Municipal Airport, fifth largest in Pennsylvania, is dedicated in Richland Township. 1950 - Johnstown's population was 63,232. 1950 - Cambria County War Memorial completed, $1,500,000 arena. 1952 - Johnstown Tribune and Johnstown Democrat newspapers merge to form Johnstown Tribune-Democrat 1952 - Lee Hospital, $200,000 addition completed. 1952 - Mercy Hospital, nine-story $2,500,000 addition. 1954 - Memorial Hospital, $2,500,000 addition. 1956 - Westmont-Upper Yoder School district merges with Southmont School District to form Westmont Hilltop School District 1960 - June 11th - Trolley service ended. 1961 - Pennsylvania Electric Company moves to new location. 1967 - Dedication of the new $10 million Campus of University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. 1967 - Ribbon Cutting of the Roosevelt Boulevard Extension. 1968 - Ground breaking for Laurel Packaging, Inc. 1969 - Official dedication of Johnstown Industrial Park Drive. 1970 - Johnstown Savings Bank moved into new headquarters. 1970 - Cornerstone laid for the library for the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. 1970 - Construction begins on Cross-Kernville Expressway. 1970 - Opening Route 219 Ebensburg to Somerset. 1970 - Completion of Lee Hospital addition. 1970 - Completion of Vine Street Towers. 1970 - Starting construction for new Downtown Johnstown Parking Garage. 1970 - Groundbreaking for Carriage Hills High Rise Apartments. 1970 - Starting first classes of Vo-Tech School. 1971 - Completion of University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Library. 1971 - Completion of new Zamias Office Complex (Downtown Johnstown.) 1971 - Construction beginning on General Telephone Company's new addition (Downtown Johnstown.) 1971 - Construction beginning on Shell Building in the Johnstown Industrial Park. 1971 - Completion of new General Electric warehouse and office in Johnstown Industrial Park. 1971 - Completion of new Richland Senior High School. 1972 - Completion of Shell Building in the Johnstown Industrial Park. 1972 - Construction beginning on second Shell Building in the Johnstown Industrial Park. 1972 - Completion of Fulton J.
