Thirteen utility-scale solar power plants with a combined capacity of 287 MW were connected to the grid in the US in January, up considerably from 79 MW in December and from 256 MW in January 2013. According to the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) January Energy Infrastructure Update, the US had 8.10 GW of installed utility-scale solar generating capacity as of the end of January. This amounted to 0.70% of total installed US operating generating capacity, up from 0.64% in December. Japan could cut the FIT for solar power by 14% on Apr. 1 to reflect the lower costs of operations and maintenance, according to new estimates from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). BNEF forecasts that the FIT will fall to ¥31.1 (30¢) per kWh plus tax from its current rate of ¥31.1 per kWh plus sales tax at the start of the next fiscal year. Spot market prices for crystalline silicon modules saw little movement in the week ended Jan. 21. The average price of monocrystalline modules on the German spot market dropped 4.3% last week to €0.66 ($0.91) per W. Swiss equipment maker Meyer Burger Group and Swiss research institute CSEM intend to jointly develop a pilot manufacturing facility in Neuchâtel, Swizterland that will produce hetero-junction solar cells using a combination of crystalline and amorphous silicon. German equipment manufacturer Singulus Technologies AG recorded a positive operating result for 2013 after achieving a 23% increase in sales. According to preliminary results, the company achieved annual sales of about €134 million ($184 million) and was able to raise its EBIT to around €2 million.
