Norwich City held title-challenging Manchester City to claim a battling point in a pulsating 0-0 Premier League contest at Carrow Road.
The Canaries defended manfully for prolonged spells against the high class visitors and could have even won it in a frenetic final few minutes with Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Anthony Pilkington both spurning decent openings urged on by a raucous home support.
Hughton’s starting line up contained four changes from the team that lost 2-1 at Cardiff City last weekend. Joseph Yobo came in for his Canaries’ debut with Ryan Bennett ruled out through a thigh injury. Yobo only joined the club on Monday after completing a short term loan move from Turkish side Fenerbache and the Nigerian international partnered Sebastien Bassong at the heart of the Norwich backline.
Leroy Fer came back into midfield in place of Johan Elmander, who was missing from the matchday squad along with Robert Snodgrass and Jonas Gutierrez - Nathan Redmond and Pilkington restored to the line up in those wide midfield areas.
Manchester City arrived at Carrow Road without injured duo Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho. Manuel Pellegrini opted to deploy Alvaro Negredo up front with Stevan Jovetic in support and Edin Dzeko, who had scored three goals against Norwich in his last four meetings, starting the match on the bench. Gael Clichy also came in for Aleksandar Kolarov at left-back and Martin Demichelis switched to central defence in Mataja Nastasic’s absence, with James Milner drafted into midfield for the visitors.
Hughton looked to match up the title-challengers from the start with Alex Tettey and Bradley Johnson paired as two defensively-minded holding midfielders behind a three of Fer flanked by Pilkington and Redmond supporting Gary Hooper.
Norwich started on the front foot with Martin Olsson forcing a corner inside the first two minutes but Redmond’s weak delivery was easily cleared by Demichelis at his near post. Yaya Toure picked out Clichy with a raking pass in behind Russell Martin but David Silva was crowded out after an initial slip by Yobo.
Olsson then hammered a rising strike against the head of Pablo Zabaleta from 20 yards after Redmond had turned Jesus Navas. Redmond wastefully ballooned over in the 16th minute with Joe Hart to beat 12 yards out after Hooper rolled in the teenager following Clichy’s original slip.
Olsson then produced a tempting outswinging cross which Clichy was forced to head behind with the Lower Barclay in full voice given the hosts’ vibrant start. Hooper smashed the ball home from the resulting corner but the striker was correctly adjudged to be in an offside position after Fer’s close range header was parried by Hart.
Milner was fortunate to escape a yellow card for hauling down Fer with the Dutchman leading the breakout; referee Moss’ leniency did not meet with the approval of the home support. Norwich continued to carry a threat in wide areas, but Redmond’s final ball let him down again on the half-hour mark after a sharp initial trick to escape the close attentions of Clichy.
Norwich’s momentary lapse of concentration shortly afterwards almost proved costly when Zabaleta powered onto Jovetic’s ricocheted pass intended for Negredo, but dragged past John Ruddy’s far post. Bassong then hacked behind after the visitors worked Navas into space down the right flank.
Negredo slammed a header against the top of Norwich’s bar in the 36th minute after Demichelis’ glancing header diverted a Navas corner invitingly towards his compatriot stationed barely five yards out. The Spanish international then unleashed a fearsome left footed strike from 18 yards which brushed the top of Ruddy’s side netting with the England keeper diving to his left.
The hosts’ were increasingly pinned deep inside their own final third as Manchester City moved menacingly through the gears in the closing stages of the opening period. Bassong’s wild clearance dropped at the feet of Silva but the home captain regained his composure to clear his lines.
Ruddy then kept his side level in the 43rd minute with an excellent low stop to deny Jovetic after Silva had picked out the forward lurking undetected on the edge of the Norwich penalty area. Hooper’s speculative shot struck Vincent Kompany at the opposite end from Tettey’s hopeful clearance but it was a rare incursion as the visitors continued to dictate, but Norwich’s committed efforts were fully appreciated by the home support on the half-time whistle.
Jovetic refused to give up on a lost cause straight after the restart to force a corner, but Silva’s set piece was hacked away by Olsson. Navas linked seamlessly with Silva to get behind the home backline but Johnson was alert to cut out the cross with a sliding block.
Olsson superbly followed Johnson’s lead in the 57th minute when he threw himself in front of Navas six yards out after Redmond and Martin failed to sense the gathering danger down the Norwich right. Martin did enough seconds later to distract Negredo at the far post with the Spanish striker powering onto Milner’s teasing cross.
Norwich’s growing confidence was underlined on the hour mark when Martin rampaged forward before controlling Hooper’s back heel and hammering a volley from 16 yards out just wide. The visitors’ responded by introducing Dzkeo for Jovetic. Johnson denied the Bosnian who rifled a venomous strike on his left foot shortly after his introduction. Hooper made way for van Wolfswinkel in the 68th minute after the former Celt required prolonged treatment following a block tackle, although Norwich’s club record signing had spent the previous 10 minutes vigorously warming up.
Milner tried his luck again from 20 yards but Tettey blocked one more, with the scale of Norwich’s desperation to resist now approaching epic proportions as Manchester City thundered forward. Moss’ patience finally ran out with Milner in the 72nd minute when he was cautioned for hauling down Olsson as the Swede tried to relieve the growing siege.
Dzeko lined up Martin but his attempted drag into the opposite corner dropped a yard wide of Ruddy’s near post.
Tettey had to bail out Martin at the expense of a yellow card after the full-back dallied long enough for newly-arrived Aleksandar Kolarov to bear down on the Norwich penalty area, but Manchester City’s intricate free kick was cleared by Tettey.
Dzeko’s far post header bounced up and over in the aftermath before Moss went back to book van Wolfswinkel for his attempted challenge on Milner. Navas then dragged wide in the 82nd minute with Manchester City surging forward in waves.
Ruddy gathered Milner’s low cross after Silva found a sliver of space in front of the massed home ranks before Kolarov miscued to huge applause from the home fans to give the men in yellow and green a breather. Van Wolfswinkel reacted angrily to a tussle with Toure in the first of three additional minutes with television replays appearing to show the Ivorian kick the striker in the back. Norwich remarkably had the energy to twice threaten an improbable late winner when Redmond burst through but his low cross somehow evaded the sliding van Wolfswinkel from point blank range sandwiched between two Manchester City defenders before Pilkington then rolled Zabaleta but fired over as he aimed for Hart’s far post from an acute angle.

Can I weigh in here? John Hartson was no stranger to the sweet trolley. Ok he was only on loan with City for a month but he might have stayed longer if the club had restocked the vending machines more regularly. I think his shorts were sponsored by Air UK and when he went back to West Brom, he donated them to Norwich Airport which now uses them as one of their air socks. Probably, apocryphal.

Regarding the Trolls, only complete idiots would come on this site to denegrate NC after such an excellent display against a top 3 team, still we knew they were idiots didn't we. Well played Redmond, for such a young lad he was brilliant in going past such highly regarded defenders. Include him in every game in preference to Snoddy. Would have liked to see Murphy put on in second half instead of Pilkinton who is still a bit lazy and not up to speed yet. Very good performance and enjoyed by the majority of fans even though only 1 point but thats 1 more than most people expected.

I am going to start by saying well done to the manager and players for putting in a fine performance. The team looked balanced. I am not a Snodgrass knocker, but he likes to play on the right and so we seem to try to accommodate that by playing Redmond on the left. Pilks is also a player who adds balance to the side because he is two footed. Now, having played so well, the challenge is to keep up this level of performance and concentration. That is something that has been beyond us this season, which I put down to a lack of real leadership in the team. Onwards, and hopefully upwards. We have to get a result against West Ham

Last week I said Snod for captain. Now I'm not sure he should be in the starting line up, after seeing Pilks and Redmond. This selection malarkey is quite tricky. Perhaps I should go a bit easier on Hughton. Then again, he's paid (handsomely) to get it right. I'm not. If Hoops is not well and RVW not fit for purpose, Becchio must start on Tuesday. If not, he might be tempted to wander over to the Westham bench and keep that one warm instead. Without Caroll, Westham are more likely to give him a run out than Hughton is.

Once again we concur, TK. This time on Bradley Johnson. Also the winger business. I am not a `Snodgrass Knocker` per se, but he tends to be a tad egocentric. Couldn`t help feeling that our movement was quicker and more positive yesterday. Yes, put him on the left, but he doesn`t have the pace or trickery displayed by Redmond, who seems pretty `two-footed`. Long ago I wondered whether Robert needs a rest. Some of the good aspects of yesterday`s selection and performance were forced by injury.

Does Redmond have the same effect on the training pitch ? He has huge talent but does not seem to learn very quickly. Rushes of blood can be dealt with, hope it happens soon. Martin`s usual errors, non awareness, out of position and back to the play, were all there. Good job he had an experienced CB alongside him. Great effort to stop the billionaires from the Middle East.

point well earned against a under performing man city side.All credit to the players though who actually earned their wages yesterday,one or two mistakes but a much better performance which they must keep up till may,starting with the hammers tuesday.Barring injuries i would like to see that starting eleven again v whu.Redmond needs to work on his crossing and shooting but has the pace and skill to open defences up,more than RS does and pilks is slowly coming good again.suppose ch has to bring on Rvw because of his price tag but would becchio be any worse?

A great result yesterday and had we kept our stirker on the pitch we surely would have taken all threee points. Perhaps Becchio should have been given a chance rather than RVW. Brew, I am not sure why so many fans are against Snodgrass, he scored a great goal last weekend and works his socks off. Redmond done ok yesterday but hit row z more than once with wayward shots. For me Pilkington did not look match fit and I for one would like to see Snodgrass playing as a left winger on Tuesday. I was a little surprised to see Fer get MOTM yetserday as he was the third best central midfielder in my view. Tettey had a great game and Johnson was not far behind. Yobbo also looked very good and seemed to draw the best out of Bassong who finally looked back to his besk of last season.

I`m touched(!) by your interest, BW. No, not been on Google translate. Many years ago I lived in a Suffolk village which had a nice lttle restaurant which was taken over by a delightful young Dutch couple, who dubbed me Gek Brouwer. Coincidentally, they were Roy Orbison fans like me, and they set me a project to translate the lyrics of `I Drove All Night` into Dutch. Too many biers etc! I didn`t get very far but `Ik moete ontsnappen` was my starting attempt at `I had to escape` but I couldn`t work out my participles so gave up. That`s just about all the Dutch I know apart from the odd word like `Oranjeboom`, `het bier` and `de hond`. Have to agree with others that Redmond, despite some aberrant final passes\wild shooting, looked more of a threat to defences than Robert ever does. Pilks had his moments too. Bradley Johnson was excellent and played some decent measured passes. Good ol` Brad! I don`t understand the bit about Hoots` upper lip, Stew. Then you generally confound me. Keep a wary eye on Ma Pydsodd`s dumplings ;-)

Great result, and at last a game plan was used. The team actually looked like it knew what it was doing and it did it very well. Excellent everyone, the players had drive, commitment, and pressed (for most of the match). Why not do this every week??? Well done Hughton got the tactics right (even if it was stolen off Chelsea and it was obvious what we had to do) it's a step in the right direction. No West Ham next week, lets see some progression, a plan, high pressing football please.

Hopefully to dispel some fear about the end of our season. Here is a list of the amount of games left to play against the top 7 sides for everyone in the bottom 11 of the table: 7 Sunderland, 6 FulhamWest Ham, 5 NorwichWBA,Palace, 4 CardiffSwanseaHullVillaStoke. That puts Swansea, Hull, Villa and Stoke at a slight advantage to us and everyone else equal or worse off when it comes to avoiding the drop.

Hughton will be here until end of season... so pointless discussing his future until then. We look better with Tettey and Fer together on the pitch. RVW needs a goal.. play him with the under 21s and build his confidence up again.. he must have had something worth £8million before he came here. At least we know we can take points off of top teams.. that fact alone may save our season... now let's complete the double over the hammers

Much better shape and teamwork today without Snodgrass on the pitch. He tends to dominate the ball (we called players like that ball hogs when I played) with very little in the way of results. He just doesn't have the technical skills to cut inside and try to take things on himself. He exposes Johnson and Martin when he does that.

Very disappointed to see CH chastising Tettey for a long range strike that had Hart scrabbling in the second half. Next time he won't shoot Chris! Shame Redmonds 'sweaty' was a foot behind Wolf at the end. Would have been a great finish. Need the same again Tuesday please.

.....BP.BP!...I firmly believe that Snodgrass is NOT the answer for Norwich City,s problems!...In my opinion he along with Chrissy and others are the cause of them....we had a bit more shape today, and other players realised that they did not have to bow to the managers pet, and were able to express themselves without fear....long may it continue!!!.....

....Hello Dave! At long last those representing us put in a decent afternoons work!.....on the plus side, Ruddy played almost a blinder..new man Yobbo gave steel to the middle of the defence,,and over shadowed Bassong!....Martin and Olsen were able to venture forward i n the first half, and even Pilkington looked as if he belonged.....Redmond is coming along fine,, but still has a way to go..Hooper begins to look more like Holt every game, but lacks the support that only Hoolahan provides....Johnson worked his socks off for the cause!....but I feel that Tettey and Fer are below par....RvWW is not the answer!.....Big question is!!! ...Who put the scratch marks on Dave,s...sorry I meant Chrissy,s upper lip?.....nice piece of sirloin steak for dinner tonight!!!!.....

Ive been trying to say for the past hour that I thought we played rather well, and particularly because Robert Snodgrass didn't play. I have no particular grudge against Mr Snodgrass. Its purely and simply that I don't think he is very good at his job, nor do I think the person pressing the delete button all day is a worthy editor

That makes nine games where we have wondrawn and the other team scored nil. Only 4 times have we got points from games where the opponents scored. So from the games left and doing things the Hughton way, four 1 - 0 results and nine defeats makes 37 points. Is that enough? In recent years just about. I still think Fulham and Cardiff are poor (except against us) and will be two of the three. Can we win four? No idea. Are we due a little run? Will we be bottom three after West Ham? Will McDally wield the axe? Do I wish this season was over? Yes to the last, help me with the rest!

Well played by the boys. However, at the risk of sounding negative, Man City seemed to play more like a bottom of the table side - well below their standard. They maintained a lot of possession, but lacked that decisive cutting edge that they usually have in the final third. Apart from David Silva, nobody played at their best, or even close it. Norwich were lucky that a below par Man City showed up today. I will give credit to the Canaries for pressuring the ball well and forcing Man City into playing the ball wide, or even making the occasional error. The defense was definitely an improvement over most of the performances this season.

Now let's not get ahead of myself, but if there is to be a turning point then this has to be it, and with apologies to hound of the Barking Baskerville and anyone else still enthused with ecstasy, I must know why? Bad day at the office for the Mancunians? True, couldn't hit a barn door from three feet all afternoon and had to resort to bullying, but no, that's too simple. Next! What about Snoddy then ?, we definitely missed him didn't we? Definitely, the whole team played better without him, and even though there were misteaks, none of the players wore that mantle of confusion that has become so familiar, you know, the one where they don't look like they have the faintest idea about what's going on. Heavens, yes, that one. Also I would imagine that no one swore at Chrissie. I liked the new wingplay formation. I was worried about the extent that we went to, open the door for our opponents, and I would have liked to have seen a bit more pressure being applied in the opposite direction, but, the overall performance should, and I say SHOULD, stand us in good stead for Tuesday when we go to the pudding Boleyn basin , especially given that the unfortunate carol singer has had his wings clipped. Mmm..yes, these dumplings are very tasty, smooth, round, and all washed down with delicious Oyster Bay Pinot Noir and neglige, sorry, negligence. Really, my spelling is woefull.

The result today proves one thing, when the team wants to play well, they can. I'm sure the thought of revenge for the last meeting spurred city to a good performance. So with that being said, why can't we play like that every game? And I'm sorry to say it but it's ALL down to management, plain and simple. We have the talent but the passion only comes out now and again. And only a good manager is going to fix this.

At last, today's team looked balanced with a game plan, and did carry a goal threat against a top four free scoring Manchester City. Well done the Canaries!. I still wonder why Houghton continues to select RVW when all the evidence is that he is badly out of form or even out of depth at this level. He also looks very lightweight and easily shoved off the ball. Yet again Wes warms the bench and Becchio is totally ignored. In the short time he was on, Ricky managed to get himself booked and miss the one golden chance we had by completely mistiming his kick a yard out. I really hope he comes good and wish him well , but to leave out Becchio is beginning to look personal. Hope Wes gets on at West Ham and proves once again his worth to the City cause.

TK - watched the replay on NBC and Hooper did come back from an offside position when the ball was first hit towards goal, a correct but close call, although it actually made it more difficult for him to get into position to put it in. Unfortunate.

A great performance and if we had a striker on the park late on we surely should have won the game, how did RVW miss that one. Does anybody know why the goal was disallowed first half, from the other end it looked a good goal. The big problem is we must learn to beat those teams down and around us, starting with WHU on Tuesday, that really is a six pointer for us.

Have to be delighted with that performance and result. We could even have nicked the win. Trick now is to build on it, starting at West Ham. We scored 3 against them last time! As Michigan says, Milner was fortunate to stay on. Townchild is a tvverp. Too early for Dubaiphoria, Smudger. Let`s just hope this is a basis for recovery. Fact is, we`ve won only 16 of 63 games since the change of management - which is relegation form. A couple of wins would change that.

Great point. Milner was lucky to stay on for 90 mins due to a star struck ref - Michael Bailey's phrase. West Ham game really critical - three points there with the other mid-week games going our way could give us a bit of relief, although based on this we do play better when the bottom three looms.
