Acrobatic troupe makes first appearance

Cirque du Soleil will be taking the stage during the 74th Academy Awards — a first for the acrobatic troupe.

Repping five Cirque productions, 30 artists will salute what show producer Laura Ziskin called “a particular aspect of film.” Benoit Jutras will be composing the music; Debra Brown is choreographing the perf.

“I’m not going to say exactly what they’re planning, but I can tell you that it will include a film element and will be spectacular and original,” Ziskin said.

Speaking of music, John Williams is set to return to the Oscar podium for the first time since 1975, serving as the kudocast’s music director.

He will co-conduct with first-timer Mark Watters, with whom he appeared at this year’s Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies. Gig will rep the third time that Williams, who is nominated for two Oscars, has conducted the Oscar orchestra.

On the presenters front, Tom Hanks and Jennifer Lopez are the latest additions. Oscarcast will mark the 10th time that Hanks, a governor of the Academy, has served as a presenter and Lopez’s fifth.

The Oscars will take place March 24 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland. Show will be telecast live on ABC.
