The Chessington Zoo Railway 1931-1985

The 12” gauge railway at Chessington Zoo was an integral part of the zoo from its building in 1930; in fact the railway, its locomotives and rolling stock were all built by a remarkable firm, Barnards Ltd. of Norwich who had been selected to construct the zoo enclosures and much of the infrastructure.

Barnards never built another railway, but did a very good job, especially with the line’s long-lived motive power - two petrol engined 4-4-0s based on the GWR ‘Dukedog’ class, the development of which is at the core of this most enjoyable and informative little book will appeal to anyone who visited the zoo in their youth, as well as all interested in miniature railways. It is written by the present owner of the line’s locomotives and rolling stock.

37 pages. 38 illustrations, some in colour. Larger format softcover. Definitely five star for value and interest!
