Covert Operations
Large scale wars and occupationssuch as in Afghanistan and Iraq are extremely costly and have little public support. To counter this, the UShave massively expanded their clandestine military and intelligence operations worldwide.
These covert operations are sometimes referred as ‘secret wars’ and involve targeted assassinations of suspects, kidnappings of alleged high-value targets and drone strikes, among others.
They are usually carried out by the CIA, US Special Forces and/or private military contractors, such as Blackwater, in countries which are not at war with the United States of America. These operations violate their sovereignty and often cause great grievances amongst the local population.
Covert operations have been reported in over a hundred countries and have been extensively used in Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen.
