Vice-Admiral Joshi succeeds Admiral Nirmal Verma, who retires on August 31. He will hold the post for three years.
Commissioned in the Navy's executive branch in 1974, Vice-Admiral Joshi, 58, has had a variety of command, staff and instructional appointments. His sea command includes guided missile corvette INS Kuthar; guided missile destroyer INS Ranvir; and aircraft carrier INS Viraat, a Defence Ministry release said on Tuesday.
Vice-Admiral Joshi takes over the reins of the Navy at a time when it is set to induct INS Vikramaditya, the second aircraft carrier, and other warships, long-range surveillance aircraft and submarines.
A highly decorated officer, Vice-Admiral Joshi has served as Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Island Command, and Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee. He has also worked as Defence Adviser in the Indian High Commission in Singapore from 1996 to 1999.
A graduate of the Naval War College, USA, he is an alumnus of the College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai, and the National Defence College here.
