MOGADISHU, Somalia Feb.27, 2014 (Garowe Online)- Federal Government of Somalia's President Hassan Shiekh Mohamud Thursday named Hassan Mohamed Hussein Mungab as the new Mogadishu mayor and the governor of Banadir region, Garowe Online reports.

In a presidential decree seen by GO, the former military court chairman was appointed following consultations with Prime Minister Abdiweli Shiekh Ahmed Mohamed and the Interior Minister.

Mohamud Ahmed Nour Tarsan, the war-torn city's outgoing mayor has lost the post to Mungab, although he rebuffed to become Deputy Minister of youth and sports earlier in January when Somalia Prime Minister revealed his cabinet line up.

Speculations on the sacking of Tarsan has been circulating over the past few days but today's move by President Mohamud officially indicates his removal from the office.

According to Somalia Federal Government officials, Some Mogadishu districts are on the verge of Al Shabaab seizure after hundreds of Al Qaeda inspired fighters infiltrated the town. Dozens of people were killed in two deadly blasts that rattled key government institutions in Mogadishu within a week.
