By his able adaptation of the French combat formations to the American units and by the thorough instructions he gave the students of the Army Candidates' School in the technique of the combat formation, Captain Allain has given valuable service to the American Expeditionary Forces. Later, as Liaison Officer between the Marshal Commanding the Allied Armies and American General Headquarters, by his courteous efforts and good judgment, he has rendered much valuable assistance to the American Army.

BERNARD, FREDERIC

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Frederic Bernard, Quartermaster, French Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. With extraordinary heroism Quartermaster Bernard achieved the seemingly impossible in rescuing 70 members of the crew of the U.S. Army Transport JINSEN MARU, when that vessel foundered at Ile d'Yeu, France, on 4 December 1918. Braving the rocky surf, he got a line to the ship when other efforts had failed, and by that line sent all the members of the crew one-by-one to shore, being himself the last man to leave the ship. Displaying personal bravery of the highest order, he voluntarily jeopardized his life to perform this courageous service.

Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Amaury De Lagrange, Captain of Air Service, French Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. Captain De Lagrange's broad knowledge of the conditions of modern warfare, gained through creditable service at the front, coupled with his loyalty and friendship for the United States and the American Army, fitted him admirably for his important service as a member of the French Mission at Washington. Later, upon his return to France, as Chief of the Aeronautical Section of the French Mission at Tours, he assisted materially in the establishment of schools and training systems for our Air Service, thereby rendering services of the utmost value to the American Expeditionary Forces.

On duty with the French Mission attached to the 4th American Army Corps, and later with the 2d American Army, Lieutenant Dumas rendered most valuable assistance to both the G-1 and G-3 Sections of the Staff in the preparations for and during the St. Mihiel offensive. He prepared the orders for the movements of French troops operating in this offensive, and saw that they were properly executed. He also gave us great assistance in solving problems of traffic control and billeting, working cheerfully day and night performing arduous tasks and going far beyond the bounds of duty to render service to the American Expeditionary Forces.

LASNET, ALEXANDRE B.

Lasnet, Medical Inspector, French Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. As Chief Surgeon of the 6th French Army, Medical Inspector Lasnet placed all the facilities of his complete organization at the disposal of the American Expeditionary Forces for instruction purposes of our inexperienced medical personnel. In February 1918, when the 26th Division became a part of the 6th French Army, he made the most complete and detailed arrangements for the care of our sick and wounded and assisted in every possible way in making their instruction period a success. During the Chateau-Thierry offensive, when several divisions of the American Expeditionary Forces were in the 6th French Army, he rendered significant aid to the American units. Later, when he became Chief Surgeon of the group of armies of the Center, he again manifested the same whole-hearted spirit of cooperation and helpfulness. No demands were ever too great to receive his consideration and no effort was left unmade by him to assist in meeting the many emergencies which confronted the medical department in the trying periods of 1918. His services were of great consequence to the American Expeditionary Forces.

While he was a Member of the 2d Bureau at French General Headquarters, Major Mabille Manifested a warm spirit of cooperation by doing all in his power to aid the members of the American Military Mission at these headquarters, placing at their disposal all the important facilities of his office, rendering invaluable service to the American Expeditionary Forces. Captain Thenault Commanded the Lafayette Escadrille from the time of its creation in April of 1916 until it was transferred to the Air Service, American Expeditionary Forces, in January 1918. He led the squadron throughout the operations in Alsace and the Verdun offensive in 1916, later participating in the Allied offensive on the Somme and the Aisne. In 1917 he continued to command the squadron which was withdrawn from the line, and participated immediately afterwards in the operations on the Chemin des Dames. During this time more than 50 American pursuit pilots served in this unit. By his initiative, force, courage, and devotion to duty he contributed materially to the successful operations of the squadron and instilled in the American pilots under his command the principles of pursuit aviation, which contributed materially to the success of other American pursuit organizations when these pilots were transferred. By his ability as a pilot and his frequent missions over the lines he set an admirable example to the American officers under his command.

WISSEMANS, MAURICE

His wide experience in battle conditions and his whole-hearted desire to be of assistance to his country's allies enabled him to render services of great value to the American Expeditionary Forces. He freely placed at the disposition of the American Expeditionary Forces all his resources as to hospitals, ambulance and train transportation, and medical material. His able advice and valuable assistance was a material factor in the provisions for the care and evacuation of our battle casualties. He rendered services of great consequence to the American Expeditionary Forces.
