Oscars: 'Frozen' May Be the Clear Favorite, But 'The Croods' Is Not Going Down Without a Fight

Los Angeles City Councilmen Tom LaBonge and Mitch O'Farrell announced the latest honorees Monday as part of an initiative to keep film productions local.

Also Monday, Ken Ziffren officially was named the city's film czar, replacing former Academy chief Tom Sherak, who died late last month after battling prostate cancer.

The Made-in-Hollywood Awards, launched two years ago, are given to Oscar-nominated feature films that were made in the historic Hollywood filmmaking hub. This is the first year that animated feature films, such as Disney's blockbuster Frozen, have been included for consideration.

During the first two years of the initiative, only Argo and The Artist met the criteria for qualification, and each went on to win the best picture Oscar.

"This award tradition has been created to encourage the return and growth of film and television production to its historic home in Southern California," explained LaBonge.

"There is nothing like a motion picture in Hollywood that portrays such talent, not only in front of the camera but behind the camera as well. The Made-in-Hollywood Award truly highlights how Hollywood is so important in the film industry around the world and the globe."

"We are honoring three films made in Hollywood, and most importantly we are celebrating the fact that hundreds of entertainment jobs stayed here in Los Angeles," explained O'Farrell, who recently was named vice chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Entertainment Industry.

"I want to extend my sincere appreciation to those involved in the production of these films and for giving Angelenos a sense of pride knowing the movie they are watching was shot here in the City of Angels. I am working to ensure that in the coming years, the Made-in-Hollywood Awards draw from a more crowded field!"

The presentation will take place Thursday on the Heart of Hollywood Terrace of the 1600 Vine building, situated on the historic site of the Hollywood Brown Derby, with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce as a co-sponsor.
