US authorities confirm Russia completed its HEU-LEU Agreement obligations

US Energy Secretary Еrnest Moniz on 18 December signed a document (Determination Of Completion Of The Russian HEU Agreement…), which acknowledges a full discharge by the Russian side of its obligations under the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the United States of America Concerning the Disposition of Highly Enriched Uranium Extracted from Nuclear Weapons, dated 18 February 1993.
 
The document certifies the downblending of not less than 500 tons of Russian weapons-origin highly enriched uranium (HEU) and the importation of the resulting low enriched uranium (LEU) into the United States.
 
Earlier, the US Department of Commerce published another document, called the Determination Of The Quantity Of Russian Low Enriched Uranium Declared To Be Derived From Highly Enriched Uranium And Imported Into The United States, which stated that over the period from 1995 to 2013 a total of 14,446 tons of LEU, produced by converting 500 tons of HEU, have been imported into the United States.
