New Godzilla 2014 Details and Interviews emerge from the latest issue of Total Film!

Author: Chris Picard | Jan-17-2014 9:56 PM

A new interview with Godzilla (2014) cast member Aaron-Taylor Johnson and Visual Effects Supervisor, Jim Rygiel has appeared in the latest issue of Total Film magazine and features some hidden bits of information regarding Godzilla and what we can expect from Gareth Edwards' 'realistic approach' to creating the King of all Monsters.

Thanks to forum member King_of_Zombies, who posted up a scanned page from the latest Total Film issue in the Godzilla forums, we have a closer look at their Godzilla feature!

To sum the interview up in a few points:

  • Godzilla will be 350 feet tall
  • Godzilla rises from the Pacific Ocean to rampage and ravage cities
  • This role was extremely physically demanding for Johnson
  • Godzilla's "fighting" style has been compared to that of how Komodo Dragons and Bears fight
  • The budget for Godzilla is mentioned to be around $160 Million

Quite a few hidden gems of info were found in this article. We're assuming the points are accurate. What do you think of the interview and the points listed above?

Godzilla is less than 4 months away! Be sure to follow Godzilla-Movies.com for the latest news, udpates and discussion!

If Godzilla is 350 ft tall is that the tallest Godzilla so far?

Goji ›

@GOJIRA2K

only by about 30 feet

Derek6505 ›

@GOJI> Actually 50 ft. Tallest Godzilla was 100 meters.

MiketheG7453 ›

the destroyer of worlds? 350 feet tall? he's not even big enough to knock over half the buildings in San Fran.....laughable.

Cleve ›

100 meters = 328 ft.  So this Godzilla would be 22' taller than the Heisei-era Godzilla.   Not a huge difference, but this Godzilla does not appear to stand as upright as the Toho version, so it could be significantly more massive.

xxsaberblackcrow ›

It doesnt matter if his size is not great he is still the biggest Godzilla and also some buildings in San Fransico are small so Godzilla can destroy them and Godzilla can use his atomic breath too destroy the other big ones. and also There,s this Skyscarper website where it mesures the buildings too see who,s higher and as you see there over 350 feets talol that makes Godzilla the perfect size too destroy the buildings in San francisco here,s the link too see what i mean http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?cityID=114

King_of_Zombies ›

look at him:

he is hunched, so I think that the new Godzilla, is more longer than taller, Like theropod dinosaurs, but dragging his tail, what does him more like a moving mountain, maybe he is not very much tallest than previous incarnations, but is sure thet he will be more massive and heavier, also stronger and unstoppable once in movement.

Goji ›

@DEREK6505

100 meters is equal to about 328 feet, maning this godzilla is taller by 30 feet

doggiezilla ›

350 ft, the tallest godzilla by only 22 ft. i was going for 400 ft - 500ft, but 350 ft is good.

GODZILLA HIMSELF ›

im not 100% convinced that he is precisely 350 feet tall.  the satement is not in any of the quotes, it could very well be an assumption on the part of the  author of the article. if it is true than godzilla is only taller than every other "movie" godzilla. marvels godzilla was 150 meters so if this is true than they didn't count him. in any case he will still be epic, i was hoping hed be taller than the pacific rim kaiju though.

Akagi ›

I can't believe how many of you are all like "ONLY 350 FT!", c'mon people. Edwards said it was only by a little bit that he was the tallest godzilla.

So nice to see half your insane size estimates obliterated. Lol, 800 ft...

ShazoTheHedgehog ›

If you guys want to see a picture of a 350 ft tall building. Here is the link, that is how tall he will be.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_Complex

Akagi ›

Everything adds up.

Edwards said he was only the tallest godzilla by just a little.

And those who say "ONLY 350 FT!?!?!" do you realize how tall that is? Yes, its smaller than a lot of skyscrapers, but its still HUGE.

Yet none of you can accept it, even though here it is, visual supervisor saying it himself, 350ft and you're still spouting your wishful thinking and insanity.

What about biggest godzilla 'slightly' did you not understand when he said it?

Gamzilla234 ›

Why are fans so nitpicky? First you complain that the head is too small, then the spines are too small, then the feet are too small, now that he's not big enough? I think 350ft is better and more realistic than those 600-800ft estimates most of you had. I bet $100 that most of you were expecting the Godzilla look to be like Matt Frank's design. You get what you get and what you get here is a Godzilla fit for 2014.

gtbetta35 ›

Some of you are truly laughable. The largest animal to ever grace this planet is the blue whale that measures in at about 100 feet long. This Godzilla is 3.5 x BIGGER. The butt hurt  fans who guessed 700 or 800 feet  make me laugh. And on Godzilla's fighting technique, I myself have studied both Komodo dragons as well as various specie of bear... Now, both animals are incredibly close combatted equipped and rely on their sheer bite force and power to show dominance. Both also show signs of "sizing up" before fighting, which is what thousands of animals (including us) do . But what the fighting technique really teaches us here is that Godzilla is going to have a formidable opponent to fight. Both species' techniques work best / are displayed best when an equal and worthy opponent is at the other end. It would be pointless to study two species that have evolved perfectly in order to fight  and fend off equal or larger opponents. Good news. Really good news. I don't think little MUTO exoskeleton  will do much against G's biteforce. Something bigger is coming. It's been kept under wraps.

yokoshai ›

WHat the eff with the people complaining about his size...seriously, Gareth only said he'd be slightly taller, and I've always been curious why there were so many here thinking his size would be extremely exagerrated despite official info like that from him.

Skreooonk1789 ›

Which month edition is that Total Film??Imma buy it fo sho! BTW i like the 350 ft Godzilla..It's realistic, dont make him too big..

Skreooonk1789 ›

MIKETHEG7453 › Big enough to kick yo mama ass..

Druzilla54 ›

I agree with King of Zombies in that I think this Godzilla looks longer than he is tall. So he'll be 350 feet tall but probably 500-600 feet long. His tail alone is as long as his body. Either way he's going to be terrifying!

G fan 84 ›

HEY!!!! he's bigger than ZILLA nough said.

Gojira Senpai ›

So, pretty much nothing new? We knew all of this, even the bear thing, they said that at Comic-Con. The only thing "new" is the 350 ft. tall confirmation, and some think that's not even true.

StarhunterNebulaM ›

That's a pretty decent size, and I like the fighting methods (if true). and at least no "beam wars"

MiketheG7453 ›

SKREOOONK1789...your funny. To bad you ain't big enough huh??

HedorahTheExplorah ›

I was hoping he'd be ridiculously massive in the 500-600' range, but logic told me he'd be about this size (350'). I think some of the marketing has been a bit deceptive though - that first poster with the choppers near his tail make him look huge, as does the current skydiver poster. I suppose Zilla 98' used this same sort of 'bigger is better' marketing too.

gtbetta35 ›

Marketing isn't meant to be taken seriously lol....... He absolutely dwarfs th Golden Gate Bridge in the poster with the High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) jumpers. It's supposed to exaggerate his size.

Gojira2K ›

I'm  fine with 350ft tall it would be hard to make him bigger than that.

thepike ›

I for one, don't want Godzilla so big as to dwarf everything else around him. 350 ft. is good. In fact, given the choice of being larger or smaller, I would prefer smaller(a little). There would come a point where if he were so large, say 700 ft., I feel he would make everything else around him somewhat inconsequential. He has to be able to interact with the environment in a realistic and intresting way. If a city is too easy to destroy, what's the fun in watching it be destroyed? I wanna see some effort!

@Gamzilla234-From everything I've seen, his spines are too small! :-)

True American Godzilla ›

This is cool! My latest guess for Godzilla's size had it at around 400', but 350' works as well. The shortest skyscraper in San Francsico is 400', so being 350' tall would allow one to hide behind the skyscrapers if needed. I'm surprised I hadn't thought of the fighting style being realistic, I should have considering everything else is based off of realism.

Now if we only had a better view of the American Godzilla, then I could make a more accurate size comparison wallpaper.

RR44 ›

$160 million budget.. holy CRAP.. that is signifigant. I honestly thought this G would be around 400 plus feet tall.. but 350 is nice too. That IS huge! As to the reference to a "fighting style'.. why would ya need to mention it UNLESS theres another behemoth in this movie... and I believe there will be a very large monster other than Godzilla. I do not think that they will kill him (G), but mabey put him to sleep or freeze him. That would be realstic..If they off him.. and don't leave a clue at the end that signals a sequel.. a lot of fans will be hot. We don't need to see some news anchor declaring "GODZILLA is dead toward the end of the movie. The 54 G was offed in the water.. and i think thats what will happen here too.. but G will not be the only one of his species to have survived.. watch for the sympathy from some paleontologist and a statement made to that effect. I am so stoked for this movie.

RR44 ›

after reviewing a video on youtube... watch?v=fiWYXgxp6_g the title of video is called...Godzilla 2014 A Better Look.. and stopping at 28 seconds in.. you get a pretty good view of G next to a building that IS 779 ft tall... the bank of america building.CONFIRMED. and it would appear that G is much bigger than 350 ft. watch it and see. no doubt he is bigger and I believe that Legendary put that in the trailer on purpose. Why put G next to the tallest freakin' building in San Fran .. if not to give you an idea of this G's size? If G is 350 ft tall in this film.. then the bank of america building has been shrunken down significantly... for this movie. but I digress.

GhostKaiju ›

@RR44 You do realize he's not standing right next to the building, right? You have to remember that perspective changes how tall, short, or massive something may look, and I'm pretty sure it's just the forced perspective that makes it seem as though Godzilla is that tall.

However, even then, shouldn't we be considering the fact that this magazine may be making a guess as well? I mean, the writer of the magazine said it, not Gareth Edwards, not somebody from the production staff. Just the author of the magazine. They could've just pulled out a random number and ran with it.

xxsaberblackcrow ›

350 feet tall is okay too me When IGN was having an interview with Edwards he said that his Godzilla doesn,t want too be too big

Lyuztaven ›

LOL at the guys whining because they wanted a 1 kilometer tall Godzilla.

I for one am very happy to read this news. This is just great!

As always (since this movie was first announced in 2010 )I'll keep supporting and appreciating all the effort and hard work put on this film by Gareth Edwards and the production team at Legendary. They've been doing an awesome job since day 1.

RR44 ›

@GHOSTKAIJU... THAT MABEY TRUE.. HOWEVER.. THERE IS A BIG HEIGHT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 350 FEET VS 779 FEET.. sorry had caps on.. not yelling.. anywho.. if from the perspective of the camera.. which is what we see in the video I mentioned.. Godzilla should not even come close to the height of that building even if he was 400 feet tall. pitch angle taken into account.. and from that view.. it was only a slight pitch angle. So to everyone who thinks that I want a ultra massive 1km tall G... um.. no. I am just aware of camera angles and that video is very revealing as to the approximate height of G. and from view.. he is not 350 tall in that video.. he is a heck of a lot bigger. I personally put him at or around 600 feet.. based solely on that shot in the video. BTW.. I have a copy of it now and I intend to assess the pitch angle view from the dude with the goggles watching as he is descending.

RR44 ›

if you look closely at that video I mentioned.. right at 30 seconds in you can cleary see that G is taller than 350 feet.. even taller than 400 ft.. he is almost as tall as the building that he is walking near by to.. so at a distance from the building.. he appears to be very tall indeed. almost mountain sized. I am may be wrong and I'm good with that if I am.. but... If I am right about this.. then we are going to be treated to the biggest freakin' monster out of Hollywood to ever grace the big screen.. in history. I AM NOT SAYING THAT HE IS 779 FEET TALL.. CAUSE HE'S NOT. but he is not 350 tall either.

Herkamer63 ›

350 feet is a good height, however i can't shake the feeling that that height is not accurate, at least what appeared in the trailer. if i had to guess from the trailer, i'd put him between 400-600 feet. not just from the halo jump scene alone, but the comic con footage where you see him in the smoke. it may be a bad observation, but did you see how small the windows were in that piece of footage? it could have changed as to his overall height, but i feel 350 feet is inaccurate. in any case, this will be a great movie.

BCrockett94 ›

Am I seriously the only person who knew the budget was 160 million for the past.. I dunno... Eight months?

BCrockett94 ›

Also, none of that was "confirmed" in the article. For the most part, everything that was "confirmed" wasn't quoted by someone who worked on the film, except for the 'physically demanding' bit as well as the fighting style of Godzilla, but even that is speculative at best. As for height, that's a speculative description given by the author. The budget has been known for the longest time, hell, I think i remember using those exact numbers some time ago on this site. As for the "rising from the pacific" thing, that's to be expected. Afterall, he does attack San Francisco, Hawaii, and I believe The Phillipines and Japan, don't quote me on those two. I mean, really.. This article provides us with little to no real new information.

Herkamer63 ›

@RR44, you maybe on to something. i looked at the trailer again and something to add, he's hunched over quite a bit. it could be just the angle, but given that the building was in front of him and was off in a distance, I'm having a hard time believing that he's 350 ft. as i said in my last post, look at the comic con footage of him in the smoke while it was daytime. look how small the windows are on the buildings. plus look at how many floors were covered in the footage. finally, look how far up they went just to get a head shot. not to mention the size comparison of the monster at the airport and godzilla's foot coming down. massive in size. this article could be giving an edcuated guess. it could very well be right and it's all hot air about Big G being between 400-600 ft in height, but looking at the footage, 350 ft sounds off. the only thing edwards said was he'll be short enough to hide behind buildings. meaning he won't be taller than the tallest buildings. we'll see when the movie comes out.
