The Acme Thunderer Tank Whistle Model # 442, By J. Hudson & Co. Mark V Tank. A.Strauss
The British Mark V tank was an upgraded version of the Mark IV tank, deployed in 1918 and used in action in the closing months of World War I.
The British Mark V Tank, In a post card of that period.
The Acme Thunderer Tank whistle made after this tank is one of the most famous whistles, made just after World War I. Today actually Eleven Mark V tanks survive. The majority are in Russia or Ukraine and are survivors of the tanks sent there to aid the White forces during the Russian Civil War.
There are probably less whistles left ...
The whistle is a mith among collectors, being a very rare and sought after by collectors.
Only few whistles known to exist. I must had been an expencive whistle to produce at the time.
The first one that appeared in the 2000's (2008) achieved the price of 1000 GBP, on Ebay.

Made C. 1918 and available in the early 1920's.
The inside of the whistle is the larger Acme Thunderer london type escargot whistle model
It is built with two tank embossed brass pressings sides that fit over an app 6.5 mm heavy cast brass sides are fixed to the larger and a heavy bulky cast brass piece which goes all around the actual whistle excluding the upper part of the beak where the " The Acme Thunderer" stamp in a rectangular frame appears . (One of the scarcer stamps in general).
Inside there is a large cork pea.
It has Loud sound and not an easy one to blow , one needs to adopt a special embouchure holding the whistle diagonnaly since the mouthpiece does not go into the mouth as in other escargot whistles. The whistle seems very different from any angle you look at it .

Hi, I reside in Australia and have an Acme Thunderer Tank Whistle that i have had since my childhood in the 1950's. Mine would compare more than favourably to the one pictured in this article, although the tracks at the front require a small repair but are complete. I would be pleased to discuss this whistle should anyone have an interest.
