Matobo National Park

Nestled in the centre of the Matopos Hills lies the Matobo National Park, a mass of wooded valleys and granite hills that include some of the most majestic rock formations in the world. Formed by river erosion over 2000-million years ago, the granite surfaced and produced smooth surfaces over time, among broken hills, strewn with boulders and speckled with vegetation.

A Zimbabwe safari that includes a trip to the landscape of Matopos Hills quickly reveals the inspiration behind its name, which means ‘Bald Heads’ in Ndebele. With part of the Matobo National Park set-aside as a game park, which has been stocked with black and whites rhinos, travelers are graced with ample opportunity to witness some of the most majestic creatures on the African continent. The game park also boasts beautiful scenery including some awe-inspiringly balanced rocks and impressive views of the Mpopoma River Valley.

Today, the Matobo National Park is renowned as one of Zimbabwe’s prime wildlife sanctuaries. It provides a home to the black and white rhinos, as well as a variety of antelope species, leopard, baboon, lizard and bird species. It also boasts the highest concentration of black eagle in the World, a feat that makes a visit to the Park an unforgettable experience when on safari in Zimbabwe.

For history-lovers, the Matopos Hills hold a great deal of relevance to the history of Zimbabwe. Cecil John Rhodes once held an estate in the Hills, and his grave can be visited at a site called World’s View, on the summit of one of the hills. The graves of Sir Leander Starr Jameson and Sir Charles Coghlan can also be found in the Hills along with memorials to Major Allan Wilson and the Shangai Patrol.

The Matopos Hills, and indeed the Matobo National Park itself, are still seen as sacred ground with the Ndebele rain shrine to Mwari, the god of their ancestors, seated among the cracks and crevices of the Hills.

As a place of such natural, historical and cultural significance to the incredible country of Zimbabwe, the Matobo National Park set in the Matopos Hills is a highlight for any safari package.
