8/25/2009 - SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The former vice commander of the 21st Space Wing at Peterson AFB, Colo. took command of the 50th Space Wing here Aug. 20 in an official ceremony held in front of the DeKok building.

Col. Wayne Monteith succeeded Brig. Gen. Cary Chun, who will transfer to the National Reconnaissance Office, Chantilly, Va., to become the new Deputy Commander of Space Support and Integration, Joint Functional Component Command for Space, U.S. Strategic Command.

After accepting the 50 SW guidon from Lt. Gen. Larry James, 14th Air Force commander, Colonel Monteith paid homage to those who came before him.

"There is no greater honor for me than to come to work every day at a base named after a true space pioneer," Colonel Monteith said. "I am honored to follow in the footsteps of these space titans and I am proud to serve you, the men and women of the 50th Space Wing."

Colonel Monteith is a command space professional who has served in various special duty capacities at major command, combatant command and Headquarters Air Force staff positions.

"Not only does he (Monteith) understand the mission, but he also understands how to take care of people," said General James. "He will lead this wing to new heights and carry on the legacy of those before him."

Some of Colonel Monteith's previous assignments include serving as the Director of Navigation Warfare and Positioning, Navigation and Timing for the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration at the Pentagon and as a Peacekeeper Intercontinental Ballistic Missile combat crew member. He has also commanded the Air Force's only ICBM combat crew training squadron.

Other duties included senior ICBM Standardization and Evaluation crew commander, ICBM instructor and chief of ICBM flight testing.

Colonel Monteith was born in Essex, England, and earned his commission as a distinguished graduate from the University of New Mexico's Air Force ROTC program with a bachelor's in geography. He also holds a Master of Science in business administration from Lesley College, Cambridge, Mass.

He has received two Defense Meritorious Service Medals, three Air Force Meritorious Service Medals, two Air Force Commendation Medals and two Air Force Achievement Medals.

As the 50 SW commander, he is responsible for more than 5,300 military, Department of Defense civilian and contractor personnel serving at wing locations worldwide in support of more than 170 communications, navigation and surveillance satellites and their associated systems valued at more than $66 billion.
