Den nya förenade synoden

På söndag den 23 mars 2014 är ett tragiskt datum i den grekiska kyrkans historia. För 90 år sedan den 10/23 mars 1924 införde Ärkebiskop Chrysostomos Papadopoulos den s.k. Nya Stilens kalender i den grekiska kyrkan, vilket orsakade den splittring som idag består mellan de som kallas gammalkalendariker (efter grekiskans Παλαιοημερολογίτες, Paleoimerologites) och nykalendariker, som idag är den grekiska statskyrkan. Oavsett vad man tycker i sakfrågan, så är splittringen djupt olycklig. Hittills har det funnits två större grekiska synoder av biskopar som följer fädernas kalender i Grekland och som representerar cirka 95% av alla gammalkalendariker, den ena leds av Ärkebiskop Kallinikos och den andra leds av Metropolit Kyprianos. I Sverige finns bara Metropolit Kyprianos’ synod och den representeras av två församlingar (Stockholm och Uppsala) och ett kloster. Den gammalkalendariska rörelsen splittrades tyvärr över hur man skulle betrakta nykalendariker. De två största grupperna genomförde en dialog 2008-2009, som sedan återupptogs för ett och halvt år sedan och har i veckan utmynnat i att man är överens. Man har arbetat fram ett omfattande teologiskt dokument för att konfrontera en av de viktigaste frågorna som den Ortodoxa kyrkan har att hantera idag, nämligen kyrkosyn och den ekumeniska rörelsen. Detta dokument är nu de två grupperna överens om och har inbjudit systerkyrkorna från Rumänien och Bulgarien och den Ryska utlandskyrkan för ett ”pan-ortodoxt möte” kring detta dokument på fredag.  Idag kom dessutom tillkännagivandet att igår, tisdagen den 18 mars, förenades de två grekiska grupperna till en under Ärkebiskop Kallinikos och våra biskopar under Metropolit Kyprianos blir en del av den förenade synoden. Nu på söndag kommer en gemensam liturgi firas i klostret Helige Nikolaos i Paiania i Athen. Från Sverige deltar Fader Anders, som är hjälppräst i Stockholm och ansvarig för klostret i Grillby och församlingen i Uppsala.

Tillkännagivandet från vår stiftsbiskop Kyprianos

Notification Concerning Union
Most Reverend and Right Reverend Holy Hierarchs;
Reverend Fathers;Venerable Monastics;
Beloved Children in the Lord;

Dear Brethren and Friends in Christ:

We are happy to inform you that the Union of the Orthodox Ecclesiastical Community in Resistance with the Holy Synod under Archbishop Kallinikos has on this day come to fruition and is now a reality, by the Grace of the Lord, through the intercessions of our Lady, the Theotokos and all the Saints, by the power of the Venerable Cross, and by the prayers of our Father and Metropolitan of blessed memory.

Today, on Tuesday of the Third Week of the Holy Fast,March 5/18, 2014, in joint deliberation, the two sides decided upon and proclaimed their Union, and henceforth there exists one and only one Synod, under Archbishop Kallinikos, consisting of ten Metropolitans and eleven Bishops (the former addressed as “Most Reverend,” the latter as “Right Reverend”).

The hithertoArchbishop of Etna has been elevated to Metropolitan (ninth in order of seniority), with His Grace, Bishop Auxentios of Photike as his Assistant Bishop, while Their Graces,Ambrose of Methone and Clement of Gardikion have been elevated to Titular Bishops, with the same titles, but now being Diocesan, not Assistant, Bishops.

With regard to the Bishops of Nora and Luni, what has hitherto been in effect remains in effect, only now reporting to the Primate-President and the Holy Synod.

There no longer exists a Holy Synod in Resistance nor a President thereof, inasmuch as the Union has brought forth a single and unified Synod of the Church of the True Orthodox Christians of Greece.

Other informatory documents will follow,with a detailed report on what has been decided upon and is henceforth in effect.

† Note! On the Sunday of theVeneration of the Cross,March 10/23, there will be a concelebration of the Divine Liturgy by a multitude of Hierarchs, whereby the Union will be solemnized, at the Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas in Paiania, Athens.
