With more than 550 locations worldwide, the Commissioned Corps has an active role in aiding the advancement of health in the international community. In recent years the Corps has been involved in:

  • leading the successful global campaign to eradicate smallpox (including a massive immunization program)
  • investigating and identifying the emerging AIDS epidemic
  • providing clinical services for Haitian, Cuban and Southeast Asian refugees
  • identifying and isolating three separate acute hemorrhagic fever viruses (Ebola, Lassa, and Marburg) in Africa
  • helping to restructure Iraq Ministry of Health

Planning for the Next Pandemic

Commissioned Corps officers are among the staff at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who are involved in planning and research to prevent and react to the next pandemic. Corps officers will also deploy to assist health workers here at home and abroad in the event of a public health emergency. Learn more about Health and Human Services planning efforts.
