The Rapture Begins in HBO’s Ultra-Creepy New Show The Leftovers

Short of getting sucked out to sea and drowning, few things seem more horrifying than being the person who isn’t taken in a Rapture. (I have weird fears.) That’s why everything about this first trailer for HBO’s upcoming The Leftovers seems extra super creepy.

“Two percent doesn’t sound like much, but two percent of the entire planet, of every person on it, that’s more than the world’s 10 largest cities combined,” the voiceover intones. “It’s 140 million people—and like that, they were gone.”

This teaser doesn’t really offer much detail about where they went or why, but those familiar with the book by Tom Perrotta (Election), on which the show is based, and the work of the show’s co-creator Damon Lindelof (particularly Lost) can see that The Leftovers is probably going somewhere very, very dark. Want more evidence of this? Spend some time staring at that “We Are Living Reminders” sign in some random woman’s bathroom.

Again, there’s still not a lot to go on here, but this looks pretty promising. The Leftovers lands on HBO on June 15.
