Critics pick the best movies of 2011

Added in last update (Jan. 11): St. Petersburg Times

Below is our updated running tally of the films most frequently mentioned by individual critics on their year-end Top Ten lists. Note that if a critic ranks more than the standard 10 films, we will not include films ranked 11th or worse. In case of a tie for first or second, each film will receive the full points for that position. Our points system works as follows:

  • 3 points for each 1st place ranking
  • 2 points for each 2nd place ranking
  • 1 point for being ranked 3rd - 10th, or for being included on an unranked list

Drive and Warrior are my favourites. anyone interested in film and looking for a different opinion, check out my best films of 2011 list:

The problem with these lists is that you don't necessarily know which movie critic matches you in terms of taste. I've found this website, which can help:

    http://whichcritic.com/

  • cinemaitaliano

It helps if you are fresh and fully alert while watching The Tree of Life (as with any deeply moving film, e.g., The Diving Bell and the Butterfly). It also helps if you have a certain level of compassion, empathy, etc. Perhaps, all the people dissing The Tree of Life may feel more comfortable perusing a website which ranks the best Bruckheimer film of all time. Just sayin'. Not to sound snooty, but if you don't get The Tree of Life, YOU may need to go back to film school.

Some solid choices, but I thought 'Tree of Life' was very, very dull. I realize that apparently I'm in the minority here, but I wouldn't put it on my personal list of the best of 2011. My number one at the moment is 'Drive,' though 'The Descendants' is a close second. I haven't seen 'Melancholia' yet, so can't comment. Interesting to compare the movie critics choices to the moviegoer's choices for the best movies of 2011:

http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/best-movies-of-2011 'Tree of Life' kind of takes a nose dive on this list...but some pretty good top 10 choices IMO.

  • lagom

Richard Roeper released his top 10: http://newssun.suntimes.com/entertainment/9555810-421/richard-roepers-top-11-films-of-2011.html

There's also a list compiled from a group print and web critics from Sydney: http://www.mattriviera.net/2011/12/sydney-film-critics-best-of-2011.html

  • Shortfuse

It may be a critical darling, but Tree of Life was quite possibly the most intensely boring movie I have ever seen. And this is a movie that involves flashbacks to the beginning of the universe. Too bad Terrence Malick didn't flash back to film school and learn how to write a coherent script.

  • Shiira

    "Jane Eyre", hello?

  • youlikewelove

Professional critics get to see films 2-6 weeks before they open and many will have seen key December releases at festivals or have received preview copies so I would say these are accurate despite being posted early. However, I think it's sad there is so much consensus here, all very dull. Consensus may indicate lazy critics or an uncreative year for film (this I doubt). Might be worth Metacritic broadening its survey to allow a wider variety of distinctive critical voices to come through. With so many films being produced around the world and streaming allowing easy access to them, the time is right to broaden the net. For the record I liked the Aussie film 'Animal Kingdom' and the wonderful documentary 'Herb and Dorothy' (finally screened at a few small cinemas following its award-winning showing at three American film festivals last year).
