Digital Internal Communications System FONET

FONET is a set of devices and their software creating a unified data exchange base between military vehicles on the battlefield.

One of its basic functions is providing digital voice communications based on available means of communication. Furthermore  the system integrates the military vehicle’s electronic equipment  as well as controls wired and radio networks. Military vehicles equipped with  FONET are capable to operate in automated command systems or fire control systems.  Modular concept of the system enables selection of appropriate configuration  for each military vehicle while ensuring full compatibility between  voice communication and data exchange. 

The FONET system has been developed into a series of software solutions allowing for the execution of tasks imposed by the modern battlefield. With full support for IP solutions and the integration of all available means of communication, the system allows for integration of military vehicles equipped with FONET into an extensive information network for data exchange and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) communication. A military vehicle equipped with FONET system becomes an effective component of contemporary and future network-centric command systems.

Construction of the system: modularity, scalability, distribution
The FONET system is built on the basis of a central unit that acts as a hub of components of the system. Since  the system also works in distributed IP networks, central units  can occur as network elements that share system elements to which the former are connected.

Crew members’ desktops, computers and radio communication devices are connected directly to the central unit. Desktops of the system are equipped with headset connectors and many different interfaces, allowing ,for example, for integration of data ports of other vehicle’s systems (detectors of chemical contamination, laser radiation warning systems, navigation systems, etc.) and enabling to include these systems in the communication network created by FONET.

The FONET central unit is a high-efficiency communication server with the Ethernet links and the possibility of IP addressing. Thanks to the VoIP functionality, the central unit can be used in the construction of extensive communication networks without compromising capabilities, enabling access to each mean of communication, available on the battlefield. The FONET system features allow to build modern network-centric battlefield management systems around it.

Flexible hardware and software configuration.         

The FONET system components have been designed to meet the needs of their direct users and to facilitate to the maximum the processes of installation and upgrading of older military vehicles.

The small size and variety of modules, the possibility to programmatically and flexibly define functionalities  and connections  details enable the optimum selection of a suitable type of desktop for every crew member, easy integration in any military vehicle and susceptibility to expand and modify the installation, virtually without limitation.  Possible changes in the structure of connections between members of the crew, access rights to means of communication, data flow diagram, changes in the quantity and types of headsets are performed through modifications of the system configuration. This approach also enables a continuous development of the system functionality without having to replace the hardware. 

Communication on the battlefield

FONET provides connectivity, which is not confined to a single military vehicle. It provides a basis for building complex battlefield management systems (BMS, C4I), where the possibility of digital voice communication and data exchange between military vehicle crews are of fundamental importance. The  standard double-conductor field cable PKL (or LFC - Light Field Cable) , which is the  transmission medium of the FONET network, allows for undisturbed, simultaneous data transmission and conversations at distances of up to 1 200 m and 3 000 m. The same double-conductor wire combines superior officers’ desktops outside and inside a military vehicle.  With this solution, every  superior officer can work outside a military vehicle, having access to identical set of features as those available inside. Cable connectivity allows to carry out operations during radio silence (resistance to enemy electronic warfare).  The system’s central unit is additionally equipped with a dual-port link of a distributed Ethernet network, which allows for direct connection between a military vehicle and tactical IP networks.

The system provides interfaces for connecting military vehicle to field telephone networks as well as to public telephone networks PBX. Moreover the computers manufactured by WB Electronics are equipped with FONET interface and can serve as complete portable operating posts ensuring continuity of command and access to mobile means of communications, including elevated command posts.
