Mother's Day weekend offers free and cheap fun for moms

Treat mom like a queen, but on a pauper's budget, when you take advantage of these Tampa Bay area special offers for Mother's Day weekend:

♦  Spend a day enjoying nature with mom on National Public Gardens Day on Friday May 9.

The annual event is a celebration of the nation's public gardens to raise awareness of the importance of botanical gardens and green spaces in our communities.

Local botanical gardens typically waive admission fees and plan special events for this annual event.

A printable coupon may be required at the gate, so be sure to download yours at the website.

Locally, University of South Florida Botanical Gardens in Tampa, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota and Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales are participating.

♦  Kids can build a “flower delivery truck” when they visit Lowes for a Build & Grow clinic on Saturday, May 10. The project is free for kids, but registration is required. Hurry, available spots fill-up fast.

♦ Mothers receive free general admission with paid child admission to MOSI on May 10 and 11. The offer may not be combined with any other offers or discounts and there is a limit of one offer per household. Mother and child must be present at time of purchase. Special engagement exhibitions, films, events and Sky Trail Ropes Course and Zip Line are excluded. Other restrictions may apply and offer must be mentioned at time of redemption.

♦  The Tampa Bay History Center will offer free admission to all moms with one paid adult admission on Sunday, May 11.

The museum will also offer free arts and crafts for kids as a special treat.

Regular admission is $12.95 adults, $10.95 seniors, students and kids ages 13-17 and $7.95 for kids 4-13. Kids ages 3 and under are free. Free parking is available at the nearby Forum's Blue Lot.

The history center, 801 Old Water St., is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mother's Day.

♦  Bring mom to Lowry Park Zoo on Mother's Day weekend and her ticket is free.

Moms of all ages get free admission with the purchase of their son's or daughter's full-priced admission ticket (adult or child, as applicable) on either Saturday or Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ticket cannot be purchased in advance and the offer not valid with other discounts.

Lowry Park Zoo is located at 1101 West Sligh Ave., Tampa.

♦ Moms can enjoy browsing the temporary exhibit, “The Pottery of Wedgewood” that is currently on display at the Henry B. Plant Museum on Sunday for free.

The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. that day.

The turn-of-the-century Tampa Bay Hotel celebrates the Victorian lifestyles of America's Gilded Age with artifacts significant to history and the life and work of Henry Bradley Plant, transporting visitors through the late Victorian period, the beginning of Florida's tourist industry and the birth of Tampa.

H.B. Plant Museum is located at 401 W. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.

♦ The Florida Aquarium is opening its door to moms for free all weekend (May 10-11) with the purchase of another paid admission.

Moms can visit with over 20,000 sea creatures, relax on the deck with a cold drink while kids play in the wet zone and more.

The Florida Aquarium is located at 701 Channelside Drive, Tampa.

♦ Glazer Children's Museum invites moms to enjoy their facilities with their little ones on the house on Mother's Day. Mom receives free admission, normally a $15 charge for adult admission.

Kids are $9.50 and children under age 1 are admitted free.

There will also be a special Mother's Day lounge for moms to enjoy.

The museum is open from 1 to 6 p.m. that day.

Glazer Children's Museum is located at 110 W. Gasparilla Plaza,Tampa.

All moms receive free admission and skate rental with paid child's admission at SpinNations Skating Center on Saturday, May 10 from 1 - 4 p.m. The first five moms through the door also get a box of chocolates and a free coffee from concessions.

There will also be a drawing for a gift basket for one lucky mother.

SpinNations Skating Center is located at 8345 Congress St., Port Richey.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens is also offering free admission to moms with their child's full paid ticket on Sunday, May 11 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Kids ages 3 and under are admitted free; kids 4-16 $10.99; adults $15.99; seniors $14.99.
