Playsculptures

Summary

Type Sculpture

These play-sculptures were semi-abstract in their design, often based on bird and flight themes, the larger works were less representational and were reminiscent of Henry Moore's environmental sculptures. (1) Made in the artists studio the works were built up on an armature and cast in concrete. The smaller ones were cast in solid moulds and then finished in metallic paint.
The works were commissioned for playgrounds designed by Mary Mitchell, the City Landscape Architect. (2) The sculptures were received favourably in the national and local press, the Swan at Kent's Moat Housing Estate was considered "one of the most appealing" along with the toddlers playsculpture Fledgling on the same site.
