SINGAPORE - Trade agency IE Singapore has opened a second Africa office in Ghana's capital city Accra, six months after it opened an office in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The offices are part of the agency's efforts to help Singapore companies expand into the high-growth regions of West and Southern Africa, it said.

The agency hopes to use the new Accra Overseas Centre, which was officially opened on Tuesday, to promote trade and investment in the logistics, oil and gas and consumer sectors of the Economic Community of West African States, a regional group of 15 West African countries.

IE Singapore will also help companies from Ghana and West Africa to use Singapore as a base to expand into Asia and beyond.

"Venturing into emerging markets with significant investment potential is one way for Singapore companies to diversify risks as they expand their presence globally," said IE Singapore chief executive Teo Eng Cheong.

Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry and National Development Lee Yi Shyan also highlighted the richness of West Africa's natural resources.

"Our visit to Ghana this time also confirms again the vast potential you have in this country for industrialisation, economic development and poverty reduction," he said in a speech at the opening ceremony of the Accra office.
