Kent Sister City: Yangzhou, China
The Kent Sister City Association is part of a national non-profit volunteer movement initiated over 50 years ago with the purpose of enabling citizens from around the world to learn about each other, through educational, social, cultural and business exchanges.
The ancient city of Yangzhou was settled over 2,400 years ago. Located northwest of Shanghai in the Yangtze River delta, Yangzhou is well known for its fine cuisine, lacquer ware, jade carving, beautiful gardens, lakes and canals.
The friendship between Kent and Yangzhou began in 1993 with each city exchanging commemorative garden pavilions. The relationship has continued to grow through the exchange of information and delegations in cultural, economic, educational, and municipal interests.
The Kent Sister City committees in China, Japan and Norway each sponsor an annual Youth Ambassador Exchange Program. The purpose of the exchange is to offer greater Kent area high school students opportunities to appreciate and understand the culture of our sister city in China through a home stay experience for three weeks. The selected Youth Ambassadors will then reciprocate by hosting their Chinese "host" brother or sister for approximately the same length of time in Kent.
Participants: Four students from the greater Kent area.
Eligibility: Must be entering ninth, tenth, or eleventh grade.
Duration: Three weeks stay in the ancient city of Yangzhou, China
and three to four weeks in Kent, WA.
Cost: The committee will pay half of airfare and all Chinese VISA
expenses.
