The City of Ottawa Public School Board erected this memorial school. Viscount Alexander Public School was unveiled on September 24, 1951 and is dedicated to Field Marshal Harold Ruper Loefric George Alexander,(10 December 1891 - 16 June 1969), 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis KG PC (UK) GCB OM GCMG CSI DSO MC CD PC (Can). Alexander was a British field marshal who served with distinction in both world wars and, afterwards, as Governor General of Canada. He rose to prominence through his service in World War I, receiving numerous honours and decorations finishing the war as a lieutenant-colonel. He continued in the military through numerous British campaigns in Turkey, Gibraltar and India culminating in his return to England to take command of the 1st Infantry Division. Leading his Division from the outbreak of World War II, Alexander was given command of I Corps in its withdrawal from Dunkirk. Following the Japanese invasion of Burma, Alexander was sent to India to command what would later become 14th Army. In the ensuing years, Alexander commander Middle East Command/18th army Group in North Africa then 15th army Group in Sicily and Italy before being made Supreme Allied Commander Mediterranean. In 1946, he was appointed Governor General and Commander-in Chief in and over Canada until 1952. After the end of his viceregal tenure, Alexander served as the British Minister of Defence retiring in 1954.
