All About Hot Chocolate

Hot chocolate is an all time favorite.  You know you love to drink hot chocolate, but do you really know everything there is to know about it?  Read on to learn about its history, how homemade hot chocolate compares to store bought hot chocolate, and what varieties are hot on the market now:

History

In the early 1500s, Spanish explorers—namely Hernan Cortez and his traveling companions—brought to Europe the tasty beverage.  Cortez and his men famously marched across Mexico, conquering the Aztec Empire and capturing Montezuma. Whether the beverage was an early gift to people who may have thought of Cortez as a god or if it was part of stolen loot, Cortez happily took the recipe and ingredients back to Spain.  The early beverage was probably cold, spicy, and unsweetened.  It was in the 1700s that the English discovered hot chocolate and began adding milk and sugar.  From there, hot chocolate spread to the rest of Europe and then back to the Americas.  It wouldn’t be long before refined chocolate baking powder was available.  And the rest is history.

Homemade V. Store Bought

Has any issue divided our country more than that of whether homemade or store bought hot chocolate is best?  In a word—yes.  Still, hot chocolate snobs everywhere turn their noses at store bought hot chocolate that comes in disposable envelopes or canisters.  Make homemade hot chocolate by slowing heating water, milk, vanilla, dry cocoa powder, sugar, and a dash of salt.  Don’t let it boil or the milk will scald.  Prepare store bought hot chocolate by adding warm water or milk to a scoop or envelope of the prepared mixture. Is there really a difference?  May be, but the pre-packaged hot chocolate today is quite tasty, and even better, it allows for precious time to enjoy cozy snow days with family or afternoon treats with the kids.

Varieties

Hot chocolate doesn’t have to always be served as is.  Marshmallows and whipped cream are nice touches.  Holiday-themed marshmallows (think Christmas, Halloween, and even Easter) can add a great finishing touch for any social or family event.  For Mexican hot chocolate, add a pinch of chili powder and ground cinnamon to your drink.  Try adding semisweet chocolate chips and/or instant coffee granules for a high-powered upgrade.  For some grown-up fun, add peppermint schnapps or dark rum, Irish whiskey, or Bailey's.  Get an old world vibe by adding orange zest, cinnamon, and anise seed in small amounts to your basic recipe or pre-mixed hot chocolate.
